“Gerasim and Mumu” composition

In the story of IS Turgenev, “Mumu” describes the story that happened with the janitor Gerasimom, dog Mumu, serf Tatiana and their mistress in Moscow in ancient times. I was very impressed by the story, and I could not restrain my tears. This is a very bright and at the same time sad story. It is based on real events that took place in the town of Spassky, but Turgenev, as a writer, changed the ending of the story to emphasize the strength of Gerasim’s character, his resentment of the injustice of the lady and his love for Mum.

The main hero of the story is Gerasim – a deaf-mute servant of one very harmful and narcissistic mistress. He is portrayed as a mighty man of enormous growth, with huge hands and with remarkable strength. Serving in the yard of his lady, he meets with the laundress Tatiana and falls in love with her. But she must marry another. And to get rid of Gerasim, she pretends to be drunk. Since Gerasim hates drinkers, he decides to give up

his love for Tatiana. In this act, it seems to me, his willpower is very clearly visible and that Gerasim can not give up his principles even for the sake of his beloved girl.

However, the dog Mumu then appears. She is very attached to Gerasim, who saved her from the river. And Gerasim too is attached to her. Mumu is very affectionate doggie, very intelligent and kind. But suddenly the lady orders to kill Mumu, because she nearly bit her. And Gerasim is forced to get rid of it. He decides to do it himself, not trusting other servants. How hard it was for him to decide on such an act! He takes Mumu with him, goes on a boat to the middle of the river, ties Mumu to the bricks, “turns away, frowns and unclenches his hands…” For Gerasim “the most noisy day was silent and soundless” …

Mumu died at the hands of her master. After that, Gerasim runs away from her mistress and walks to her village on foot. There he lives alone in his hut and plows for four.

I liked his image very much. Gerasim is a strong, strong-willed person. Volitional, but not free. This was seen throughout

the story. He had strong and strong beliefs in life. For example, his love for Tatiana! Despite the fact that Gerasim was very fond of this girl, he could give up love for her, because he decided that Tatiana was drinking, and he hated drunkards, and so he refused this woman. And, of course, the proof of his strong will is his decisive act, when he decided to get rid of the dog himself. Despite all his great love and affection for Mum, he drowned the unfortunate animal in the water with his own hands, as he himself was servile, and by this act he wanted to prove the injustice of the world around him.
