Characteristics of the novelism of Guy de Maupassant

Realistically multifaceted and accurate recreation of everyday life of different layers of French society, the color of time and terrain; a pronounced anti-war pathos, manifested in protest against the violence and cruelty of the invaders, a sarcastic image of false patriotism, behind which moral vices hide, admiration of the compatriots who did not submit to the enemy, and the demonstration of the senselessness and inhumanity of war; understanding of love relationships in the unity of their spiritual and physical principles, the complex interaction of their social, moral and psychological aspects, in all the diversity of their higher and lower manifestations; exposing the double morality of the bourgeois, and with it – the deceit, the meanness, the insignificance of the outwardly successful norms of social life; realistic authenticity of the personal and psychological characteristics of the characters; the preponderance of the “show” over the “analysis”, the position of the author, the “observer”, which fixes in the behavior and feelings of the characters something beyond the bounds of the ordinary, reveals the moral imperfections hidden under the mask of decency and manifests in ordinary life glimpses of spirituality.
