Painting by V. G. Perov “Troika”

How tragic is the picture of VG Perov’s “Troika”! It is a reflection, a cast of cruel and terrible time, where the bestial law reigned: the strongest survives. Time, where children were deprived of their most valuable wealth – childhood.

The emaciated faces of the children, dragging along the snow a huge barrel of water, are the faces of little martyrs. These guys are a “troika”. Bitter irony sounds in the title of the picture. The narrow, childishly undeveloped shoulders of children have grown up with an adult, immense responsibility: they must drag this barrel home to not die of hunger and thirst. Water from the barrel splashes out and immediately freezes with long thin icicles. The ice crust makes the barrel even heavier, it seems, even adults can not move it from the spot. But the children, with their suffering and hopelessness on their faces, continue their unbearable path with all their might. A cold frosty wind blows through their poor,

thin clothes, the boys have nothing to cover their necks. The merciful heart of a passer-by, apparently, also flinched at the sight of this picture, and he helps the tired children by pushing the barrel from behind.

A shaggy dog runs alongside the boys with a sonorous, joyous barking. He has a thick coat, which protects both the wind and the frost, and he seems to perceive the hike behind the water as a fun entertaining walk. The cheerful mood of the dog contrasts strongly with the tortured faces of the children. It seems that if the children managed to lose an unbearably heavy burden and careless cares and at least have a little rest, they would also be happy to run around the fresh sparkling snow, skate on sledges, and make snowballs. But their destiny is to work. With desperate longing, you understand that illnesses and hard work will tear the children’s strength, even without allowing them to grow up. A protest is rising in the soul against such injustice and a desire to help at least somehow and protect these little martyrs.

The gloomy high wall of the monastery, along which the “troika”

moves, makes a picture, already written in dark, gray-brown tones, even more bleak. She says that in a cruel, unjust world there is no light, there is no way out, there is nowhere to wait for help. And because of the persistence of children in their hard work, we see that they are used to rely only on themselves in everything. In the world where they live, there are no small and adult, there are no men and women, but there are poor and rich, workers and employers. And this is very scary.

Perov’s painting “Troika” excites the deepest, intimate strings of the soul. She recalls that in any world at any time there are disadvantaged people who need help. Despite the cruelty and tragedy of the chosen plot, the picture calls us to become kinder, more tolerant, more attentive to people, to be compassionate, because the most important quality of any person is humanity.
