Painting by Makovsky “Without the Master”
At all on a place the maid in a red dress, a white apron which has settled down in a master’s armchair, has not finished cleaning.
Vladimir Egorovich Makovsky Without owner
The artist-peredvizhnik Makovsky Vladimir Egorovich was born on February 7, 1846 (according to a new style, or on January 26, according to the old style).
Makovsky was one of the most active members of the society of the Wanderers, and practically all his paintings were also present at all the exhibitions. Together with his brother – Konstantin Yegorovich he entered the pleiad of the most important artists of his time. In particular, he drew sketches for the painting of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Actual State Councilor. He died in 1920, in St. Petersburg.
Makovsky was a member of the Society of Wanderers, who sought to show their contemporary life “the way it is.” Remember the famous “Three”, in which three guys are dragging an icy barrel of
So Makovsky wrote a genre scene in which he showed the unsightly behavior of the servant in the absence of the master. Rich house. Carpets, parquet, paintings on the walls. Near a small table covered with a red velvet cloth, On the table is a porcelain lamp, covered with a shade, a silver bowl, and an ashtray. At all on a place the maid in a red dress, a white apron which has settled down in a master’s armchair, has not finished cleaning. It either lies or after it has become weak in the fight against the “green serpent”, or represents itself in the place of the mistress of this house.
As a “lady”, she lit a man’s cigar and sits in his chair. Behind her there is a dressing-table, which, undoubtedly belongs to the hostess of the house, on the big piano books lie, there is a vase with feathers of exotic birds, and as a dissonance on the carpet there is a scoop with garbage over which the maid keeps a handkerchief with which she wiped the dust. The maid is young and beautiful, this probably gives her confidence that maybe her life will turn for the better and she will not only be able to take the place of the mistress of a rich house in her dreams.
The picture shows us a long-deceased life and we look at this picture with pleasure.
