Children’s Crusade 1212

In 1212, from France and Germany, thousands of your peers, boys and disguised as boys’ clothes, went to the Crusade. They were persuaded by several young preachers who convinced the children that they had not yet angered God, so they would easily release the Holy Sepulcher. The children also sought revenge on the Muslims for their fathers and grandfathers, who died in the First Crusades. The French king and the Parisian theologians in vain persuaded the children to come to their senses. The children did not think about how they would move to Palestine through the Mediterranean Sea – they believed that the sea would part with them… Many participants of the Children’s Crusade died from exhaustion and disease while on the road. Two greedy merchants lured several thousand children to their ships and brought them to African Algeria, where they sold it to Muslims in slavery. In general, about one hundred thousand children died or went missing. Over a few, survivors and returned home, ruthlessly mocked.

The church explained the childish folly, which led to such tragic consequences, by the machinations of the devil.
