Biography of Sergiy Radonezhsky
Sergius of Radonezh – Hieromonk of the Russian Church, the converter of monasticism in Northern Russia, the founder of the Holy Trinity Monastery. Was ranked as a saint.
Childhood
Sergiy Radonezhsky was born on May 3, 1314 in the village of Varnitsy near Rostov. At baptism, the future saint received the name Bartholomew. At the age of seven, his parents gave him to study literacy. At first the training was given to the boy very badly, but gradually he studied the Holy Scripture, became interested in the church. From the age of twelve Bartholomew began to fast strictly, prayed a lot.
Foundation of the monastery
Approximately in 1328 the future hieromonk with his family moved to Radonezh. After the death of his parents, Bartholomew and his elder brother Stefan went to desolate places. In the forest on the hill Makovets they built a small temple of the Trinity.

Religious activities
A few years later in this place a thriving temple of Sergius of Radonezh – the Trinity-Sergius Monastery – was formed. Upon learning of the origin of the monastery, the ecumenical patriarch Philotheus sent the hegumen a letter in which he paid tribute to his activities. Venerable Sergius was a highly respected personality in princely circles: he blessed the rulers before the battles, tried on them among themselves.
In addition to the Trinity-Sergievsky for his brief biography, Radonezhsky founded several other monasteries – Borisoglebsky, Blagoveshchensky, Staro-Golutvinsky, Georgievsky, Andronnikov and Simonov, Vysotsky.
The great Hieromonk Sergius died on September 25, 1392.
