Countries of South America


The domination of the colonialists in South America, which began since its discovery, ended in the early 19th century. as a result of the national liberation struggle of the peoples of the continent. Participated in this fight and the indigenous people – the Indians, and representatives of mixed races, and European immigrants. The borders of modern states were formed at the beginning of the XIX century.

At present there are 13 independent states on the mainland. All states can be conditionally divided into two groups: the states of the plain east, among them the largest Brazil and Argentina, and the Andean group of countries, for example, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia.

The countries of South America are developing countries, in terms of economic development they are ahead of the countries of Africa. From the countries of South America, the products of the mining industry and agriculture are exported.

The largest country in South America is Brazil. In terms

of area and population, it ranks fifth in the world. The country is rich in natural resources. The population is very diverse, consists of Caucasians, Negroids and Mongoloids, as well as groups with mixed racial traits. Over 80% of the population is concentrated in the east, on the Atlantic coast of the continent to the south of the equator. In Brazil, a significant Ukrainian diaspora -500 thousand people. The capital of the country is Brasilia.

Argentina is the second largest in terms of area and economic development of South America. The country has rich and diverse natural resources, especially forest resources. The most important are the fertile lands of pampas and such minerals as oil, natural gas. Zinc, lead, tin, uranium ores. Unlike Brazil, in Argentina, the majority of the population are Caucasians, because in the past, black slaves were not imported here. About 70% of Argentines live in Pampa. The Ukrainian diaspora in Argentina is 220 thousand people. The capital of Argentina is Buenos Aires.

Chile is a “new industrial country”, which is developing relatively fast. Here minerals are mined: copper, molybdenum, nitrate, gold, zinc, iron ore. Chileans – a nation formed by the mixing of the Spaniards with local Indians. The largest city is Santiago, the capital of the country.
