Boring conversations about nothing

Our hero, the landowner NN, was a strange and unsociable man. He had no friends, no one cared about him, he did not invite anyone, although people were still in his house.

Once I decided to visit a hermit-eccentric and drove to him along the way. My friend, the landowner, lived in a country estate in complete idleness, and he complained that he did not find sympathy in anyone. I settled in his large hall, where there was no furniture, except for the spacious sofa on which I slept. Here, always, even in quiet weather, something was buzzing in the stoves, and during the thunder the whole house was shaking. The landlord was wearing a pendant, drinking beer in the evenings and talking to almost no one, even with me. Sometimes, however, he was attacked by another extreme: he began to talk without stopping.

About what only he did not try to start a conversation! Weather inspired him for long discussions about the benefits of rain and drought, about different climatic zones, that

in the north it is cold and in the south it is hot. In the cold edges, they say, you can not build gardens and orchards, and in warm grow bananas, oranges, tangerines, pineapples, apricots… And what there just does not grow! If we are to choose between the north and the south, it is better, of course, to live in a warm climate, where everything is enough. It’s just bad that the southern, and especially the tropical nature, is dangerous: it carries a constant threat: earthquakes, floods, tornadoes can occur there; often there are also tropical downpours that fill everything and do not stop for days, and then – and for weeks! No, it’s best to live in the middle zone of Russia, nothing threatens here, there’s nothing to be afraid of. Unless in the forest you need to be afraid of wild animals, for example bears. But you can not go to the forest alone. No wonder they say: “Wolves are afraid – do not go to the forest” …

He spoke languidly and bored, stretching out his words. Nothing, in my opinion, can overtake such despondency as the speech of a man who himself is clearly not aware of what and for what he is talking about.
