Biography of Gustave Courbet


Gustav Courbet – French artist, was born in the city of Ornan.

In 1839 he moved to Paris. It was there that the painting was taught in the biography of Courbet. Basically, he learned by copying masterpieces in the Louvre. In 1847 his work “Wounded Man” was criticized without taking it to the salon. However, the two earlier paintings of Courbet were adopted.

He first received the public’s attention thanks to “After Dinner at Ornans” in 1849. The following year there were exhibited “Funeral at Ornans”, “Stonebreakers”. Thanks to the choice of objects from ordinary life, stubbornness, the courage of the artist, his work was often insulted. Enjoying the tragedy, Courbet has grown in time to protect his works, expressions of newly acquired political radicalism.

In 1855, Courbet presented the work “Painter’s Studio”. Contested by academic artists, he organized his own room, where he exhibited 40 paintings, and also issued a manifesto of realism. Continuing to provoke, Courbet twice tried to put his paintings in the cabin in the 1860’s, he was denied. Nevertheless, during this decade the biography of Gustave Courbet became known as the history of the leader of the realistic school of painting. His influence became enormous.

In the Paris Commune Courbet was President of the Federation of Arts. After the fall of the Vendome column, Courbet was unjustly convicted, imprisoned. In 1873, he fled to Switzerland, where he spent several years in poverty. In spite of this, his aesthetic theories were not intended for distribution. Pictures Courbet delight with frankness, energy, solid composition.
