Writing an excursion

Recently we all class visited the Donetsk Regional Museum of Local History. This excursion gave us an opportunity to learn more about the history of our native land, to see interesting exhibits.

The museum was opened in 1924, and then its funds numbered only about two thousand units. However, the collections were constantly replenished and grew, and now they consist of more than 100 thousand exhibits.

We got acquainted with three main sections of the exposition: “Pre-revolutionary past of Donbass”, “Donetsk region from the Great October Socialist Revolution to our days”, “Nature of the Donetsk region”.

I was very interested to know what our region was like in the Stone Age. Numerous evergreen trees and bushes grew on its territory: ferns, placenta, gymnosperms, and the first conifers. The fauna was represented by amphibians, insects, birds. During the onset of glaciers, mammoths, cave bears, woolly rhinoceroses, deer appeared here,

as evidenced by the findings of archaeologists. So, in the local history museum there are: a mammoth skeleton, a deer horn, a woolly rhinoceros skull, an imprint of fish in the Cretaceous period.

Most of all I was interested in objects found in the excavations: stone, bronze and iron weapons and tools, pottery (including Greek amphoras and pithos (clay jugs), various ornaments (earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings, pendants).

Our guide stressed that a number of finds is of world importance. Among them are the Yelenovsky and Andreevsky meteorites, the diabase stone pestle, the Scythian stone statue.

No less interesting to me was the section devoted to the plant and animal life, the mineral resources of Donbass. In the hall there are stuffed animals and birds, among them moose, wolves, foxes, hares, marmots, mole rats, ferrets, herons, orioles, woodpeckers and many others. The ingots of the breed give an opportunity to assess the wealth of our land.

In general, I really enjoyed the excursion to the Donetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore, I learned so much new about my Donetsk region, about its past.
