Painting Perov “The arrival of the governess in the merchant’s house”
In this picture, the author depicts the moment when the governess takes in a rich house. Although this situation was the most usual, it was perceived all the same unusually.
Wealthy people invited a girl to the house, who will teach their children the right manners. These wealthy gentlemen themselves were far from scientists, but they wish the best to their children. And although both parents do not see much value in the girl, but they strive to ensure that they have everything like people.
Reception of the governess is not so warm. The girl bows to the merchant, who looks with suspicion at her – who such, where she came from. He condescendingly looks down at her, simultaneously indicating her place in the house.
Next to the merchant is the son. This is a young man who, though arrogant, but at the same time with undisguised interest watching a woman in their house. From behind his father a merchant and a daughter look out. They are also treated with great attention by the guest. Their ill-manner can be seen with the naked eye – they stand with their mouths open.
On the left side, in the other doorway, servants of wealthy merchants assembled. They have no less interest, but there is no arrogance in their eyes. A young lady with high manners would soon join them.
The governess will now train the merchant’s daughters with language, sewing, and high-fashioned manners. Could she imagine that after receiving a wonderful education, she would get here? It is unlikely that the girl expected such a fate.
