Painting by Repin “Portrait of Pirogov”

Portrait of NI Pirogov was written in May 1881, a few months before the death of the great Russian surgeon and scientist. In these in Moscow, solemnly celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of Pirogov’s professional activity. The ingenious surgeon agreed to pose Repin, despite the tight schedule of events.

Subsequently, Repin recalled how he captured his talent and identity of the person portrayed, and how easily and quickly he worked. The creation of a magnificent finished portrait took only three sessions.

Beautifully stands out against a dark background a powerful gray head, very expressively written red face of an old man. Nikolai Ivanovich’s gaze is slightly narrowed, his lips are compressed. Hands, resolutely stacked on the chest, proudly thrown back the head, raised chin, slightly frowning forehead and vivacity of the gaze tell of the resolute character and hot temperament, sharp mind and purposefulness. Pirogov seems intently peering and very wise, all

sweeping.

The technique in which a portrait is written is distinguished by incredible skill. Smears – light, natural – as if do not form the form itself, but only at ease it is wrapped around, as if the clothing surrounds the body.

Portrait of NI Pirogov – not only artistic, but also deeply psychological. Repin showed not just an old man (Pirogov was 70 years old) – he managed to convey the significance of the personality of the great founder of military field surgery, a humanist and a scientist. The magic of Repin’s painting is great – the canvas is permeated with the spirit of serenity and immortality.

Pirogov”, many other descriptions of paintings by various artists have been collected on our website. which can be used both in preparation for writing essays on the picture, and simply for a more complete familiarization with the works of famous masters of the past.
