Biography of Thomas Cole


Thomas Cole – American landscape painter, was born in England.

In 1818, in the biography of Cole, he moved to the United States, he settled in Ohio, where he was struck by rural beauty. In 1825 the artist went to New York. There, his landscapes began to be highly appreciated.

Mostly self-taught, Cole depicted places in the Hudson River valley, Catskill. Expressive nature, which Cole imprinted on his canvases, he found during hiking. So the artist became the leading member of the Hudson School. In 1829, he traveled to Europe, where he spent some time traveling in England and Italy. In France, Cole admired the countryside of Lorraine.

After returning to New York, the artist performed five of his most famous allegorical works in an artificial, neoclassical style. This series, as well as “Expulsion from the Garden of Eden”, reflected the trend of strong moralization in the biography of Thomas Cole. The works combined elements of fantasy, were less successful than his landscapes.

Other Cole paintings, for example, “Oxbow”, “Catskill Mountains”, open the viewer to the author’s great admiration for nature.
