Biography of John Constable


John Constable is an English painter, was born in Suffolk. The biographies of Constable and Turner are considered to be leading in the English art of the landscape of the 19th century.

Constable became famous for his images of the places Suffolk, Hampstead, Salisbury, Brighton. Being the son of a prosperous miller, he discovered artistic talent in his youth. However, until the age of 23 Constable did not devote himself to art. Then he went to London, to study at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Under the influence of the landscapes of 17th-century artists Ruisdael, Claude Lorrain, Constable spiritually approached nature. The direct observation of nature, the artist’s free use of flowers were exceptional in his day.

In England, in his biography, John Constable was only slightly known. His work was more popular in France. In 1824, his “View on the Stour”, “The Hay Wain” were exhibited in the art salon of Paris, received gold medals. Constable’s canvases had a significant impact on the French romantics, including young Delacroix, Bonington. Later works Constable significantly influenced the Barbizon School, as well as a little on the general direction of French landscape art.

In the US, the artist’s paintings are represented in the Metropolitan Museum, as well as the Frick Collection Museum, in the center of Mellon of British art, as well as the galleries of Philadelphia, Toledo, and Chicago. Excellent examples of Constable works are in the National Gallery of London, the Victoria and Albert Museum.
