An essay on the painting by Makovsky “The lodging house”
Pictures of Makovsky can be attributed to the art of the Wanderers. His works are characterized by the manifestation of care and understanding, the joy and emotion of the “little man”. Some of his paintings can be attributed to the struggle of the rich and the poor, it is in this contrast that he gets his works. The author loves to expose human injustice. The picture “The lodging house” was written in 1889, it is devoted to the theme of the humiliated and insulted.
In the picture we see people, unfortunate people who do not have a house, walk along the city street in search of a night’s lodging, at least for one night. We see a queue of people, they lined up with the desire to spend the night in the warmth. Many who stayed behind their backs continue to crowd. In Makovsky, in my opinion, it is excellent, it turns out, to show the character of human souls. Each person depicted in the picture has his soul and his destiny, with his own special principles capable of surviving the trials that put them to their lives.
Particular attention is drawn to the figure of the depicted old man, in the center of the canvas. This old man allows you to light another unfortunate wanderer, the old man wears ragged and battered clothes that do not heat the old man. From under his ragged shoes one can see bare legs. According to historians, the depicted old man is the artist Savrasov. The last years of his life Savrasov spent in poverty, wandering in search of an overnight stay, having rare orders. Makovsky accurately depicts the wounded souls of people. Despite the tragedy of the depicted situation, it remains to the last moment true in its harsh realism. I really liked this picture, it made me think about the events of the past, plunging into them through painting.
