Biography of Sophia Loren

Sophia Loren is an Italian actress, winner of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts. The name of the outstanding beauty Lauren is often included in the lists of the most attractive women in the world.

Early years

Actress Sofia Villani Shikolone was born in Italy, in Rome, September 20, 1934. Her father, Riccardo Chicolone, who called himself a design engineer, spent most of his time hanging out on the backyard of show business in the hope of an affair with some young actress. One of them was the mother of Sophia Loren, Romilda Villani. Villani, who had a striking resemblance to Greta Garbo, somehow even offered a trip to America to become a backup of Garbo, but the mother refused to let her go.

After the birth of Sophie, her mother took her to her hometown of Pozzuoli in the Neapolitan bay, which one of the guidebooks describes as “the most miserable city in Italy”. Despite the fact that Villani and Riccardo Shikolone had another child, they

were not officially married. On this occasion, Lauren’s mother said: “This pig could freely marry me, but he preferred to abandon me and marry another.” Despite the fact that until now Sophie is considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, in her earliest memories she describes herself as “the ugliest child I’ve ever seen.” Silent, self-contained Sophia grew in extreme poverty. Together with numerous relatives, they lived in the house of the mother’s parents, where the girl had to share one room for nine.

The outbreak of famine took such catastrophic proportions that the mothers of Sophia had to decant the water from the radiator of the car, and then, in a spoon, divide it between her daughters. During the next air bombardment, Lauren fell and severed her cheek severely. The scar from this wound will remain her for life.

Received from classmates the nickname “Cane” for her frail physique, at age 14 Sophie suddenly blossomed, turning from a frail child into a beautiful, sensual woman. “A simple walk down the street turned into real pleasure,”

recalls Lauren, her sudden physical transformation. This year, she takes second place in the beauty contest, while winning a small amount of cash and free wallpaper to repair the living room of her home.

In 1950, when the girl was already 15, she and her mother went to Rome to try their luck in acting. In 1951, Lauren receives the role of extras in the film by Mervyn LeRoy “Kamo Gryadyshi.” At the same time, Sophie is hired as a model in fumetti – Italian publications, similar to comic books, in which live pictures are used instead of drawings. And now, after several episodes and a small role in the film “Favorite”, released in 1952, the first one in which she appears under the pseudonym “Lauren”, in 1953 she brilliantly performs the main role in the film “Aida”. Another major role, in the film “The Gold of Naples,” confirm Lauren as the most promising star of Italian cinema.

Outstanding achievements in a career

In 1957, Sophia Loren gets a role in her first Hollywood film “Pride and Passion”, filmed in Paris, where her partners on the set will be Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra. And at the same time, she is involved in a love triangle with Grant and Italian film producer Carlo Ponty. And, although Lauren, as a girl, was unselfishly in love with Grant, she chooses, ultimately, Ponti – the man who, as the press joked, was twice her age, and twice her lower.

In the same year of 1957 they play swabd, but the problems that have arisen with the dissolution of the first marriage of Ponti, for another ten years, will prevent the official recognition of their marriage in Italy. Nevertheless, the alliance of Lauren and Ponti remains one of those touching stories with a happy ending that are so rare among celebrities. They were married for 50 years, until Ponti’s death in 2007. According to Lauren herself, the secret of their happiness was that, despite the status of celebrities, they never exhibited a relationship for show. “Show business is what we do, not who we really are,” she said.

In 1960, Sophia Loren performs the most significant role in her career – in the film about the Second World War in Italy called “Two Women.” In this picture, which echoes her own childhood, she appears as a mother desperately trying to feed her child in Rome-devastated war. This picture, for which in 1961 Lauren receives an “Oscar” for the best leading female role, brings her worldwide fame. Sophia Loren becomes the first actress to receive an award for a film in a foreign language.

Over the next decade, Lauren continues to star in Italian, American and French paintings, claiming the status of one of the brightest stars of international cinema of her generation. Her most prominent roles in this period are roles in the films “Yesterday, Today and Zavrta” – “Oscar” for Best Foreign Film, “Italian Marriage” – “Oscar” as Best Actress, and “Countess from Hong Kong”, in which partner Lauren on the set was Marlon Brando.

Family and other projects

In the 70s, Sophia Loren returned to her native Italy, where she spent most of the time in the extremely popular Italian films. By that time Sophie had become the mother of two sons – Carlo Hubert Leone Ponti and Edoardo, and in the 80s Sophie significantly reduced her tight shooting schedule to be able to devote more time to grown-up children.

In addition to cinematography, Lauren has business projects. In 1981, she became the first female celebrity to release perfume under her own brand, followed by her own line of eye shadow. In 1994, Lauren publishes the book “Woman and Beauty”. She continues to appear and often appears in public – one of the greatest living legends of the film industry. The most famous of her recent works are the films “High Fashion”, “Old Grumblers” and “Nine”.

Present time

To this day, Sophia Loren retains youthful energy and timelessly timeless figure. And now she still marches along the red carpet of award ceremonies in high heels and in such short skirts that even those who are much younger than her, and then would feel uncomfortable in them. Despite the roles in more than a hundred films and five decades in the limelight, Lauren remains true to his modest Italian roots. Perhaps the most accurate confirmation of this is that the best, most brilliant of her roles has always been the role of women worthy, and not stunning. As one director recently remarked, “Sophia Loren is perhaps the only movie star who has never forgotten where she came from.”

To date, Lauren lives in Switzerland, in Geneva, and still sees the world in the light of beauty: “I always wake up early and then jump out of bed – sometimes reluctantly, because every day you can find new excuses for your laziness – and devote an hour to a walk And every time I walk around the park, I think: “What if suddenly I see something beautiful right now?” I always think positively, I can hardly be caught in a state of sadness or melancholy. “
