Water lily
At the end of May, a water lily blooms, a white water lily inhabiting stagnant and slowly flowing waters, in ponds, rivers. The appearance of leaves of this plant means the end of spring frosts. His flowers, reaching a diameter of 16 centimeters, are very beautiful. But what is surprising is that they open at seven or eight in the morning, and close at five or six in the evening. As if they go to bed, and then wake up.
It turns out that people very long ago noticed this feature of the water lily and, not understanding the true reasons for this “behavior” of the flower, gave him a fantastic explanation. So, in one of the Greek legends it is told that once a beautiful nymph fell in love with a young Hercules. However, he remained indifferent to it. The unlucky nymph died and turned into a water lily. Every morning, as soon as the sun rises, the flower of the white water lily opens, and the nymph starts peering intently into the distance – whether her beloved Hercules will appear on the horizon. The Latin name of the water lily means “snow-white nymph”.
