Painting by Roerich “Return home”
The path of Svyatoslav Roerich to the modern pictorial language was through increased color expression. It, as LR Tsesyulevich wrote, is manifested in a number of works in the sound of a whole spectrum of the rainbow.
So sparkling picture “Homecoming” (1954), which depicts villagers going to their native places from the market or a holiday. This everyday sketch gave the artist a reason to put down a kind of pictorial anthem. The symbolic meaning of it is an eternal return to Beauty. Beauty is poured everywhere – in the spring forest with blossoming copper-colored leaves, in the red fertile land, in the people themselves. His tempera literally shines – then as a mother-of-pearl, then as a peacock feather. Even the simple white clothes of the Indian shimmers fantastically rich in tones. And saris, and knapsacks on the head, and fruits in the basket – everything is unusually blossomed with a play of rainbow color.
A strict laconic drawing, planar painting, a realistic and at the same time conditional understanding of the form was a breakthrough into modern Indian painting through the revival of the national heritage.
