Painting by Kramskoy “Christ in the desert”
Paintings on religious themes occupy a large place in the work of artists of all times and peoples. Scenes from the Bible, motifs inspired by biblical stories always excited the imagination of artists. One of the significant moments of the history of Christ is his stay in the desert.
Christ went there to decide how to live on. The painting “Christ in the Desert” was written by I. Kramskoy in 1872. In the picture of Kramskoy “Christ in the desert” we see a man aggravated by heavy thoughts. The gloomy landscape only aggravates this condition. Christ sits on a rock, immersed in his thoughts, bare feet, walking on sharp stones are bruised, but Christ does not pay attention to bodily suffering – his thoughts about all mankind, about the way that Christ, feeling his calling, leads people.
Jesus involuntarily clasped his hands in the castle, his attire is not flashy, as befits a carpenter’s son. He foresees further events, the temptations of the devil, the Garden of Gethsemane and the agonizing death on the cross. But he is determined to go his way to the end. This is not a broken man – this is the Son of God, who stopped to rest and examine his path.
