Vienna – the capital of the Republic of Austria – is located at the north-eastern spur of the Alps, on the Danube, mainly on its right bank.
The history of Vienna was considered from the 1st century AD, when the Romans seized the Celtic settlement located on its place and turned it into a fortress fortress, retaining the name of Vindobon, from which the modern name of the capital came to be.
In the middle of the fifth century Vindobon was subjected to the devastating raid of the Huns of Attila. The central part of Vienna adjoins the Danube canal and is surrounded by two semi-ring boulevards created on the site of the old fortress walls. In the “inner city” are concentrated the main banking and trade institutions, fashionable shops. Along the inner semicircle are the most important government and public buildings, and between the two tabloid semi-rings – aristocratic neighborhoods and districts populated by employees, traders, artisans, students. Behind the outer semicircle, in the eastern, southern and western parts of the city, as on the left bank of the Danube, are densely populated factory and quarters.
In the northern suburbs of Vienna – luxurious mansions and villas of the bourgeois. Between the Danube and the Danube Canal, on the island of Prater, is the largest park in Vienna.
Among the architectural monuments of Vienna stands the Cathedral of St. Stefana, built in the XII-XV centuries, the huge complex of the imperial palace Hofburg, combining the buildings of various historical eras and styles, of which the eldest belong to the XIII century. Palaces built in baroque style, numerous medieval churches are distinguished by high artistic quality.
Vienna is a major center of culture, primarily of musical art. With Vienna, the life and work of many of the greatest composers are connected. Here lived and created such musicians as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Strauss, who created the classic type of Viennese waltz. Who does not know such of his works as “Fairy tales of the Vienna Wood”, “On the beautiful blue Danube”? Among the city’s 15 theaters are the Vienna Opera and the Burgtheater, the country’s largest drama theater. There is also a conservatory and several concert halls.
In numerous museums and exhibition halls of the Austrian capital, rich art collections are collected. The largest library is the National Library.
In Vienna there is a radio station, a television center operates.
City transport of the capital – a tram, buses, poorly equipped metro, taxi. Vienna is one of the largest transport hubs in Europe: 12 railways meet here. Vienna is the second river port of the country.
