Life of the Normans
In the North of Europe lived “northern people” – the Normans. These are the ancestors of the present Norwegians, Danes, Swedes and Icelanders. In Western Europe they were called Vikings, in Russia – by the Varangians.
Northern Europe is far from a paradise. The climate there is cold, the conditions of life are severe. Forests and rocky mountains did not favor agriculture. The Normans more engaged in hunting, fishing and cattle breeding.
Normans were skillful and brave navigators. They built small fast and durable ships. The hull of the ship was covered with wooden slats – it well withstood the impacts of sea waves. On it they put a mast with reliable sails, but also used oars.
Вдоль бортов развешивали живописные щиты. Носовая и задняя части корабля были высоко подняты, он выглядел очень красиво. Нос венчала – для устрашения
Willingly engaged in the Normans and trade. They sold their homespun articles, fur and loot in campaigns, and bought weapons, clothing and jewelry. Even in the VI-VIII centuries. they built their small commercial villages. Over time, cities grew in their place.
