From the memoirs of the composer N. Lysenko

When Nikolai Lysenko turned eight, he met his second cousin Mikhail Staritsky. Nikolay and Mikhail felt mutual disposition and mutual understanding from the very first minute. What did not the brothers experience as a child? Secretly, like tenacious monkeys, they climbed up into tall trees. On Ivan Kupala, along with the village boys jumped through the fire. Hiding in a boat in the middle of a high reed, they watched the village boys and girls frolic at the water. Each of the brothers chose a beauty from the village girls, and both of them tried to be closer to their beloved ones at the festivities. And the girl, holding hands with the blacksmith, did not even suspect that the boy in love with flaming cheeks, with a sinking heart, watches her from behind the bushes and admires the way she jumps through the fire, tinkling with scarlet beads, and cheerfully screams with fear and delight. Once, after a beautiful woman, Nikolai jumped and nearly got burnt! But I was happy and remembered it for a long time.

Friends loved to dream about the future, lying in the steppe, under the starry sky, when feather grass bends and covers the face, and a month through the squinted eyes draws strange pictures.
