EM Hemingway and Ukraine
A huge interest in the work of the American writer in Ukraine arose in the 60s of the XX century. It was at this time that the cult of Hemingway was formed, closely associated with the movement of the sixties. “The situation in which the sixties turned out was somewhat similar to the one that caused the” lost generation “: the Soviet system deceived people, forcing them to believe in the illusion of a happy life behind which they concealed their crimes. Like the heroes of E. Hemingway, who found strength in themselves, in their souls, the sixties, in order to confront the entire controlling system, it was necessary to find support. Thus, the consonance of the general tonality of the American writer’s works to the moods that dominated the Soviet state ve been one of the leading factors of the phenomenal success of Hemingway in Ukraine. ” For representatives of the intelligentsia of that time, the American writer became not just a favorite author, but much more – a symbol of human dignity. In many houses one could see portraits of a smiling writer in a sweater and with a beard. It is this image of this courageous, strong-willed and optimistic person that has been preserved in the memory of readers of different generations. To him poetic lines Dmytro Pavlychko and Ivan Drach have devoted.
