Summary of the second part of the novel “Oblomov” IA Goncharov

I

Stolz was a German only for his father, his mother was Russian. Stolz grew up and brought up in the village of Verklev, where his father was the manager. Since childhood, Stolz has been accustomed to the sciences. But Andrei loved and fooled, so he often broke that nose, then the eye. The father never scolded him for it, even said that the boy should grow up like that.

Mother was very worried about her son. She was afraid that Stolz would grow up to be the same as his father, a real German burgher. In her son she imagined the ideal of the master. And she cut his nails, curled locks, read poetry to him, sang songs, played the works of great composers. And Andrew grew up on the basis of Russian culture, albeit with German makings. After all, there were Oblomovka and the princely castle, where the owners often visited, who had nothing against friendship with Stolz.

The boy’s father did not even suspect that all this encirclement would turn the “narrow

German track into such a broad road that neither his grandfather, nor his father, nor himself”.

When the boy grew up, his father let his son out of the house so that he could build his life on his own. The father wants to give his son the “right addresses” of the right people, but Andrei refuses, saying that he will go to them only when he has his own house. Mother cries, seeing off her son. Andrei hugged her and burst into tears, but he regained his temper and left.

II

Stolz is the same age as Oblomov. He is always on the move. Through life he walked firmly and cheerfully, perceiving everything clearly and directly. Most of all he was afraid of imagination, dreams, everything he was subjected to analysis, was passed through the mind. And he walked and walked straight on the chosen road to them, bravely stepping through all the barriers.

With Oblomov he was associated with childhood and school. He fulfilled the role of the powerful under Ilya Ilyich. In addition, Stolz attracted that bright and childlike soul that Oblomov had.

III

Stolz and Oblomov greet each other.

Stolz advises Oblomov to shake himself, to go somewhere. Oblomov complains about his misfortunes. Stolz advises to remove the elder, start a school in the village. And the apartment promises to settle everything. Stolz wondered if Oblomov was going somewhere, whether or not there was somewhere? Oblomov says that he does not. Stolz is outraged, he says it’s time to get out of this sleepy state.

Stoltz decided to shake Oblomov, he calls Zakhar to dress the master. Ten minutes later, Stolz and Oblomov leave the house.

IV

Oblomov from seclusion suddenly found himself in a crowd of people. So passed the week, the other. Oblomov rose up, complained, he did not like all this fuss, the eternal running around, the play of passions. Where is the man here? He says that light, society, in fact, also sleep, it’s all a dream. No one has a fresh face, no one has a calm, clear view. Stolz calls Oblomov a philosopher. Oblomov says that his plan of life is a village, peace, wife, children. Stolz asks who is Ilya Ilyich, what kind of rank does he consider himself to be? Oblomov says that he will ask Zakhar. Zahar replies that this is the master. Stolts laughs. Oblomov continues to paint Stolz his ideal world, in which peace and quiet reign. Stoltz says that Ilya Ilyich chose for himself what his grandfathers and fathers had. Stolz proposes to acquaint Oblomov with Olga Ilyinskaya, and also says, that the world drawn to him by Oblomov is not life, it is Oblomovism. Stolz reminds Ilya Ilyich that he once wanted to travel and see the world. Where did all this go? Oblomov asks Stolz not to scold him, but rather to help, because he himself can not cope. After all, he just goes out, no one has shown him how to live. “Or I do not understand this life, or it is no good at all,” Oblomov concludes. Stolz asks why Ilya did not run away from this life? Oblomov says that he is not the only one: “Do I have one? Look: Mikhailov, Petrov, Semyonov, Alekseev, Stepanov… you will not reckon: our name is a legion!” Stolz decides, without delaying a single minute, to get ready to go abroad. Where did all this go? V

After Stolz’s departure, Oblomov reflects on what kind of poisonous word “Oblomovism” is. What should he do now: go ahead or stay where he is now?

Two weeks later, Stolz went to England, taking from Oblomov the word that he would come to Paris. But Oblomov did not move from his place in a month or three. What was the reason? Oblomov no longer lies on the couch, he writes, reads, moved to live in the country. It’s all about Olga Ilyinskaya.

Stoltz introduced Oblomov to her before leaving. Olga is a wonderful creature “with a fragrant freshness of mind and feelings.” It was simple and natural, there was not any kind of affection, coquetry, or a share of lies in it. She loved music and sang beautifully. She was not in the strict sense of the word beauty, but everyone seemed to be so. Oblomov was embarrassed by her view.

Tarantiev in one day moved the entire house Oblomov to his kuma on the Vyborg side, and Oblomov lived now in the country house next door to the dacha of the Ilinskys. Oblomov signed a contract with Tatar’ev’s kum. Stoltz told Olga everything about Oblomov and asked to look after him. Olga and Ilya Ilyich spend all the days together.

VI

Oblomov Olga began to dream at night. He thinks that this is the ideal of calm love, to which he aspired.

Olga also perceived their acquaintance as a lesson, which she taught Oblomov. She had already drawn up a plan, how to wean him from lying down, make him read books and fall in love with all the things he had loved before. So Stolz does not recognize his friend when he returns.

After the meeting with Oblomov, Olga changed a lot, was drained, feared that she was even sick.

During the next meeting Oblomov and Olga talk about the prospective trip of Ilya Ilyich. Oblomov does not dare to confess to Il’inskaya in love. Olga gives him the hand that he kisses, and Olga goes home.

VII

Oblomov returned to himself and scolded Zahara for the garbage that was everywhere in the house. Zakhar by that time had managed to marry Anissya, and now she was running the whole economy of Oblomov. She quickly tidied up the house.

Oblomov again lay down on the couch and was still thinking about the fact that, perhaps, Olga also loves him, only afraid to admit it. But at the same time, he can not believe that you can love him. A man came from Olga’s aunt to call Oblomov to visit. And Oblomov again assures himself that Olga loves him. He again wants to confess to Ilinsky in love, but he can not overcome himself.

VIII

All this day Oblomov had to spend with the company of Olga’s aunt and the baron, the guardian of the small estate of Olga. The appearance in the house of Ilyinsky Oblomov did not stir her aunt, she did not look at the constant walks of Olga and Ilya Ilyich, especially since she heard about Stolz’s request not to let go of Oblomov’s eye, to swing it.

Oblomov is bored to sit with his aunt and baron, he suffers because he let Olga know that she knows about her feelings for him. When Olga finally appeared, Oblomov did not recognize her, it was a different person. It was evident that she forced herself to go down.

Olga is asked to sing. She sings as everyone sings, nothing fascinating Oblomov in her voice heard. Oblomov can not understand what happened. He bows and leaves.

Olga changed during this time, she seemed to “listen to the course of life by leaps and bounds.” She has now entered “into the realm of consciousness.”

Oblomov decides to move either to the city or abroad, but away from Olga, it is unbearable for the changes that have occurred in it.

The next day Zakhar told Oblomov that he had seen Olga, told her how the gentleman was living and that he wanted to move to the city. Oblomov was very angry with the talkative Zakhara and drove him away. But Zakhar came back and said that the young lady asked Oblomov to come to the park. Oblomov dresses and runs to Olga. Olga asks Oblomov why he did not show up for so long. Oblomov understands that she grew up, became above him spiritually, and he becomes frightened. The conversation is about this: about health, books, about Olga’s work. Then he decided to walk. Oblomov hints at his feelings. Olga gives him to understand that there is hope. Oblomov was delighted with his happiness. So they parted.

IX

Since then there have been no sudden changes in Olga. It was level. Sometimes she remembered Stolz’s words that she had not yet begun to live. And now she realized that Stolz was right.

For Oblomova, Olga was now the “first person”, he mentally talked to her, continued the conversation at a meeting, and then again in the thoughts of the house. He no longer lived the same life and measured his life with what Olga would say. They are everywhere, they did not spend a day at Oblomov’s house, or lay down. And Olga blossomed, in her eyes there was light, in the movements – grace. At the same time she was proud and admired Oblomov, defeated at her feet.

Love of both heroes began to burden them, there were duties and some rights. But still Oblomov’s life remained in the plans, was not realized. Oblomov was most afraid that one day Olga would demand decisive action from him.

Olga and Oblomov talk a lot, they walk. Olga says that love is a duty, and she has enough strength to live a lifetime and stop loving. Oblomov says that when Olga is near, everything is clear to him, but when she is not there, the game of questions starts, in doubt. And neither Oblomov nor Olga lied in their feelings.

X

The next morning Oblomov woke up in a bad mood. The fact is that in the evening he went into introspection and came to the conclusion that Olga could not love him, it was not love, but only a premonition of her. And he is the one who turned on his arm first. He decided to write to Olga. Ilya Ilyich writes that pranks have passed, and love has become a disease for him. And from her side it’s not love, it’s just an unconscious need to love. And when that one comes, she’ll wake up. No more seeing.

Oblomov was easy on soul, after he “sold the load of the soul with the letter.” Having sealed the letter, Ilya Ilyich orders Zakhar to take him to Olga. But Zakhar did not take it, but he mixed everything up. Then Oblomov handed over a letter to Katya, Olga’s maid, and went to the village himself.

On the way he saw Olga in the distance, saw her read the letter. He went to the park and met Olga there, she cried.

Oblomov asked what he could do so she would not cry, but Olga only asks to go and take the letter with her. Oblomov says that he also has a heartache, but he refuses Olga for her own happiness. But Olga says that he suffers from the fact that one day she will stop loving him, and she is afraid that someday he may stop loving her. It was not love, it was selfishness. Oblomov was struck by what Olga was saying, especially since it was the truth he so avoided. Olga wants Oblomov to be calm, because his happiness is in this. Oblomov says that Olga is smarter than him. She says it’s easier and bolder. After all, he is afraid of everything, believes that you can take and fall out of love like this. She says that the letter was necessary, because in him all the tenderness and care of Ilya Ilyich about her, his fiery heart – everything for which she fell in love with her. Olga goes home,

XI

Oblomov’s house found a letter from Stolz demanding that he come to Switzerland. Oblomov thinks that Andrei does not know what kind of tragedy is being played out here. For many days Oblomov does not answer Stolz. He’s with Olga again. Between them, some other relationship was established: everything was a hint of love. They became sensitive and cautious. Once Olga became ill. She said that she had a fever in her heart. But then everything went away. She was tormented by the fact that Oblomov became closer to her, more dear, more dear. He was not spoiled by the light, innocent. And Olga guessed it.

Time passed, and Oblomov did not budge. All his life now revolves around Olga and her house, “everything else is drowned in the realm of pure love.” Olga feels that something she lacks in this love, but what, can not understand.

One day they walked together from somewhere, suddenly the carriage stopped, and from there Sonechka, Olga’s old acquaintance, a secular lioness, and her attendants looked out. Everyone looked at Oblomov strangely, he could not bear this glance and quickly left. This circumstance made him once again think about their love. And Ilya Ilyich decides that in the evening he will tell Olga what strict duties impose love.

XII

Oblomov found Olga in the grove and said that he loved her so much that if she loved another, he would silently swallow his grief and give it to another. Olga says that she would not concede him to another, she wants to be happy only with him. Then Oblomov says that it is not good that they are always seen quietly, because there are so many temptations in the world. Olga says that she always tells her aunt when she sees him. But Oblomov insists that seeing each other alone is bad. What will they say when they find out? For example, Sonechka, she looked at him so strangely. Olga says that Sonechka knows everything for a long time. Oblomov did not expect such a turn. Before his eyes, now stood Sonechka, her husband, Olga’s aunt and all laughed at him. Olga wants to leave, but Oblomov stops her. He asks Olga to be his wife. She agrees. Oblomov asks Olga if she could, as some women, to sacrifice everything for him, to challenge the light. Olga says that she would never have gone that way, because he leads eventually to parting. But she does not want to part with Oblomov. “He let out a joyous cry and fell on the grass at her feet.”
