Summary Happy Prince
Oscar Wilde The
Happy Prince Winter has come, but the Swallow has decided to stay with the Prince and told him, already blind, about Egypt, where the bird so sought. After the Swallowtail leaflet after the leaflet handed out all the gold that covered the sculpture, the winged helper died. The prince’s tin heart split in two. An ugly statue was removed and melted. The head of the city decided that it was time to put the monument to himself, but the advisers did not agree – everyone quarreled. The tin heart and the dead bird were thrown into the dump, where they were taken by the Angel, whom the Lord had asked to bring the most precious thing he would find in this city.
Covered with gold and precious stones, the Happy Prince’s statue stood on a column above the city. Everyone admired the beautiful statue. Once the Starling flew over the city – he left his beloved Reed, which was a home-grown and did not share the love of travel, but only flirted with the Wind; he settled himself on an overnight stay between the Prince’s shoes. Suddenly the bird felt the tears of the Prince, he wept, for he saw all the tribulation and poverty of the city, although he had a pewter heart. At the Prince’s request, the Swallow did not fly to Egypt, but for a few days wore help to poor people in the form of jewels from sculpture: a seamstress who had a son – a ruby from a sword, a poor young playwright – an eye-sapphire, a girl who dropped matches for sale in a ditch second sapphire.
