PLOT

A small Czech village. Peasants

complete the collection of hops. Melodies of their cheerful, cheerful songs are carried far away. Only Mazhenka does not share a common fun. The girl is married to the son of rich peasant Miha – a foolish Vashka, and she loves Yenik’s farmhand. Seeing the girl, Yenik solicitously questions her and, after learning about what happened, thinks about it. Mazhenka is disappointed. She expected that Yenik would be indignant, say that she would not give it to anyone, but he only shook his head sadly. Did not Yenik love her any more? After all, she knows so little about him. Where did he come to their village? Who are his parents? In response, Yenik says that he is the son of a rich peasant, but because of his stepmother he had to leave his house and work in other people’s villages. Enik calms the girl, assuring that she loves her as before. Meanwhile, the matchmaker comes to the parents of Mazhenka – Krushin and Lyudmila. He reminds the old people of the contract, according to which Mazhenka should marry Vashka. Krushina assures the matchmaker that he will keep his word. But his wife does not want to hurry
with the wedding. In addition, we must also ask Mazhenka whether she wants to go for Vashka. Swat praises the groom, hinting at the richness of his future father-in-law. But the appeared Mazhenka resolutely refuses to marry Mikhail’s son. Then Krushina admits that he witnessed an agreement with Miha. The girl is in despair. At Vashka put on a bear skin. Parents are horrified to see Vashka in the role of a trained bear. Vashek announces to them that he does not want to marry Mazhenka. Miha and Ketsal suspect that this Yenik managed to spoil the whole thing. We must give him money as soon as possible. But also Маженка learns, that Еник has sold it. The girl is offended. Enik tries in vain to calm his beloved. Appears Micha and his wife. Seeing Yenik, he recognizes in him his eldest son, who has long since left his parents’ house. Now, according to the condition, Yenik should marry Mazhenka, besides, he also has money for the wedding. Peasants laugh at the duped matchmaker and happily congratulate the happy young.
