“Ozma from Oz” Bauma in summary

Dorothy and Uncle Henry sail on a steamer to Australia. Suddenly a terrible storm rises. Waking up, Dorothy can not find Uncle Henry in the cabin and decides that he went on deck. In fact, Uncle Henry slept, covering himself with his head, but Dorothy did not notice him. Once on deck, the girl grabs the bars of a large chicken coop so as not to fall overboard, but another gust of wind comes and the chicken coop is in the water along with Dorothy. The cover of the chicken coop flies off, the hens and roosters are drowning, but Dorothy, holding tightly to the rods, floats on the raft-henhouse no one knows where. The storm subsides, and Dorothy, settling in a corner, falls asleep,

After waking up in the morning, the girl realizes that she is not alone on the raft. Beside, a yellow chicken is cheerfully barking, which has just taken an egg. She knows how to talk and tells Dorothy that her name is Bill, but the girl renames her to Billina, believing that such a name is more appropriate

for a hen.

Soon the raft sticks to the shore, Dorothy and Billina land. They find a cave, and in it a mechanical person, Tik-Toka, who gets a key and is able to move and speak. Tick-Talk informs Dorothy and Billina that they arrived in the country of Ev. King Evoldo, who was king, once sold a wife and ten children to the King of Gnomes in a fit of anger, who, with the help of witchcraft, turned them into trinkets for his underground palace. Then, repentant of his actions, Evoldo began to beg the King of the Dwarves to return his family, but he obstinately, and then the unhappy Evoldo rushed from the cliff into the sea and drowned.

Now in the royal palace the niece of King Princess Langvider lives. State affairs do not interest her. Day-day she turns in front of a mirror and tries on one or the other head, which she has thirty-two pieces. When Dorothy comes to the palace, the princess demands that the girl give her her head in exchange for head number twenty-six. Dorothy refuses, and the angry princess imprisons her.

But Dorothy did not languish there for long. Just at this time Princess Ozma, the

young ruler of Oz, decided to rescue the royal family of Ev from the underworld. Ozma is accompanied by the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, the Hungry Tiger, and also an army of twenty-six officers and one soldier. They release Dorothy and continue the campaign together.

They manage to find their way into the underworld, but the Dwarf King refuses to release the captives. He is not afraid of the power of Ozma, because he himself knows how to conjure, and the army is numerous and well armed. However, the underground monarch invites them to play a game. Each member of the expedition has the right to try to guess what exactly the queen of the country Ev and her children turned into. Anyone who does not guess once, turns himself into an ornament in the palace, and the next one gets one more try. Gradually, all participants of the expedition become trinkets, replenishing the collection of the King of Dwarves. Only Dorothy, by chance, manages to guess once, resurrecting the little prince. This saves her from becoming an adornment, but does not save the rest. But then Billin takes over. Hiding under the throne, she overhears the conversation of the King with the Gnome-Administrator and learns what exactly the monarch turned his uninvited guests into. She demands that she be allowed to try her luck in the “guessing”, the King does not want to hear, but then it turns out that he has a weak point. He is terribly afraid of eggs, and Billina has just demolished one such under the throne. Only when he gives permission to the Chicken to pogudyvat, Scarecrow removes the egg, hiding in the pocket of his coat, where he already has one stored by Billina on the road. Of course, the Yellow Chicken returns to everyone’s life, except for the Tin Woodman. and Billina just knocked one such under the throne. The King of the Dwarves, however, does not intend to yield so easily. He threatens Ozma and her friends with terrible punishments, but then the Scarecrow launches Billy’s eggs into him. Taking advantage of the panic, his friends remove the King’s Magic Belt from the King, depriving him of his main strength. But even under the threat of turning into an egg, the King is not able to find the Tin Woodman, and, judging by him, he does not lie.

With a mixture of joy and sadness, Ozma and her companions begin their journey back. The King in desperation sends them after the army of their fellows, but the Magic Belt turns the front lines into eggs, and the army runs in horror.

On her way back, the perceptive Billina notices that the little prince, liberated by Dorothy, took out a small iron whistle from somewhere. It turns out that he was quietly borrowing it in the underground palace, and this whistle is nothing but an enchanted Iron Lumberjack. The Magic Belt gives him his old look, and now nothing is overshadowed by the general rejoicing.

The country of Eve appears a new king – the eldest prince of Evardo. Then Ozma and his friends return to the Emerald City. Dorothy is happy to visit the palace of her new friend Ozma, but one day she notices a magic picture in one of the rooms of the young princess, which shows everything that is happening in the world. Dorothy asks to show her Uncle Henry in Australia and, seeing his worn, worried face, asks Ozma to move her to him as soon as possible. The Magic Belt and here it is necessary as it is impossible by the way. Uncle Henry is happy to see Dorothy alive and unharmed. However, before parting, Ozma and Dorothy agreed that on Saturdays the young princess would call Dorothy’s picture in the picture, and if she submits a conventional sign, then Oz will immediately appear in the country.
