Biography of Robert Kampen


Robert Kampen is a Flemish painter who, together with van Eyck, is considered the founder of the Dutch school. Kampen’s biography is identified with the Flemish master because of the three flaps of the altar in Frankfurt am Main. Earlier it was mistakenly believed that these paintings came from the city of Liege.

Kampen was active in the city of Turn, becoming a full-fledged citizen in 1410, and in 1423 – the eldest of the Guild of Artists. He is credited with the work “Merode Altarpiece” in the monastery, New York, “Nativity” in Dijon, France, “Annunciation”, “Marriage of the Virgin” in Madrid, “Madonna of Humility” in London. In addition, in his biography, Robert Kampen is considered the creator of many more panels, paintings of various collections.

His work is characterized by a healthy, highly developed realism, a detailed description of everyday life. This manner also applies to the stylistic movement of another great artist, Jan van Eyck. It is believed that Rogier van der Weyden was a student in the workshop of Kampen.
