Biography of Fra Angelico

Fra Angelico, a Florentine artist, was born in Vicchio, Tuscany.

In his biography Angelico Fra is also known as Guido or Guidolino, di Pietro, Giovanni da Fiesole. After his death, he was named the Blessed Brother Angelico, despite the fact that he was counted blessed only in 1982 by Pope John Paul II.

Style Angelico differs clean lines, colors, as well as spiritual power. He vowed in 1425 in the Dominican Monastery. The first picture is dated to Angelico in 1433. It is believed that his artistic activity was begun ten years earlier.

It is also most likely that Frae first painted miniatures, small paintings, such as “St. Jerome Penitent”. Other proposed works of that period include: “Virgin and Child Enthroned with Twelve Angels,” “Virgin and Child with Angels,” “Madonna of the Star,” “Naming of the Baptist.” Angelino’s work was probably influenced by the work of Fabriano, and then he accepted the

views of the spatial concept of Masaccio.

Scientists define such works as “Annunciation”, “Coronation of the Virgin”, “Deposition”, “Last Judgment” by the 1430s. In 1436, being under the protection of Cosimo de ‘Medici, some Fiesole monks moved to the monastery of Saint Mark in Florence. Angelico Fra controlled the fresco decoration of the building.

Some of the works attributed to the hand of the great artist include: “Crucifixion with St. Dominic”, “Crucifixion”, “Noli mi Tangere”, “Annunciation”, “Transfiguration”, “Mocking of Christ”, “Presentation in the Temple “,” Virgin and Child with Saints “.

In 1445, Angelico was summoned to Rome by Pope Eugene the Third to design a chapel in the Vatican. In 1447, in the biography of Fra Angelino, the city of Orvieto was visited. There, together with his pupil Benozzo Gonzzoli, he wrote “Christ as Judge”, “Prophets” for the Chapel of Nuova. Returning to Rome, Fra wrote for several years

the greatest, most complex scenes – episodes from the lives of several saints. Nevertheless, the execution of these works, most likely, was mostly done by his students.

Angelico always had to adapt to the artistic innovations of his time. For example, to such as sculptural clarity of forms, spatial depth. Fra interpreted them in terms of spirituality. Angelico provided these new forms with his own incomparable sense of color and unity. In the USA some of his works are presented: “Crucifixion”, “Assumption and Dormition of the Virgin”, “Temptation of St. Anthony Abbot”, “Crucifixion”, “Nativity”.
