The struggle of the Swiss for independence. The origins of European democracy
Political changes in Germany continued. In it, in particular, the Swiss Union was formed. This took care of the Alpine shepherds, who rebelled against the Habsburgs.
The beginning of the Swiss struggle for independence is connected with the courageous act of William Tell. This Swiss peasant allegedly refused to bow to the royal governor’s hat. Then the governor ordered William Tell to shoot an apple from the head of his five-year-old son with an arrow from a crossbow. Praying to God, Tell carefully took aim and got into the apple. He later confessed to the governor that if he had missed, the second arrow would have let him into it. Soon, Tell was trapped by the governor and killed him. This, according to the legend, led to a war between the Swiss and the Habsburgs.
In 1315 the Swiss infantry defeated the Knights of the Hapsburgs. The Habsburgs had to recognize the independence of the Swiss Union, which later became a European state by Switzerland. Over time, a number of new cities joined Switzerland.
In the Swiss Cantons there was democracy. On a certain day, all the adult men gathered together and jointly solved the most important state issues. This political tradition has survived in Switzerland to this day. The Swiss are proud that their ancestors stood at the origins of European democracy.
The Swiss did not have to die for their king: they did not have him. At the same time, they shed a lot of blood for foreign rulers, for they willingly became soldiers-mercenaries. They were considered brave and skillful soldiers of the Pope and are now recruiting their guard from the Swiss.
Cantons – administrative districts in Switzerland, Belgium and France.
