“The eldest son” of Vampilov in brief summary

Two young people – a medical student Busygin and a sales agent Semyon, nicknamed Silva – priodararili for unfamiliar girls. Passing those to the house, but not meeting the further hospitality, which they counted on, they find that they were late for the train. The time later, on the street is cold, and they are forced to seek shelter in a foreign neighborhood. Young people themselves are barely familiar, but misfortune brings together. Both of them are guys with humor, they have a lot of enthusiasm and games, they do not lose courage and are ready to take every opportunity to keep warm.

They are knocking at the house of a lonely thirty-year-old woman named Makarska, who has just driven away Vasya, who was in love with her, but she also otshivaet them. Soon, not knowing where to get to, the guys can see how an elderly man from a neighboring house calls her, who called himself Andrey Grigorievich Sarafanov. They think that this is a date, and they decide to take advantage

of the opportunity that, in the absence of Sarafanov, they should visit him and get a little warm. At home they find the frustrated Vasenka, the son of Sarafanov, who is experiencing his love failure. Busygin pretends that he knows his father for a long time. Vasenka keeps very wary, and Busygin tries to persuade him, saying that all people are brothers and we must trust each other. This brings the clever Silva to the idea that Busygin wants to play the kid, introducing himself as the son of Sarafanov, Vasenka’s stepbrother. Inspired by this idea, he immediately plays along to his friend, and the dumbfounded Busygin, who did not mean it at all, is Vassenka as his unknown older brother who finally decided to find his father. Silva is not averse to developing success and inclines Vasenka to celebrate the event – to find in the home bins something from alcohol and drink on the occasion of finding a brother.

While they are celebrating in the kitchen, Sarafanov suddenly appears, going to Makarska to ask for a son who is drying from love. Vassenka, who is drunk, is wooing him with eye-popping news. Confused,

Sarafanov at first does not believe, but, remembering the past, still allows such an opportunity – then only the war ended, he was “a soldier, not a vegetarian.” So his son could be twenty-one, and his mother’s name… her name was Galina. These details are heard by Busygin peeping out of the kitchen. Now he is more confident in himself when he meets his imaginary father. Sarafanov, asking the newly-born son, is increasingly convinced that before him is really his offspring, who sincerely loves his father. And Sarafanov really needs such love now: the youngest son has fallen in love and strives to fight back, daughter marries and is going to Sakhalin. He himself left the symphony orchestra and played at the dance and funeral, which he hides proudly of the children, who nevertheless know and only pretend that they do not know anything. Busygin plays his role well, so even an adult daughter of Sarafanova Nina, who first met her brother is very suspicious, is ready to believe.

Night Sarafanov and Busygin spend in a confidential conversation. Sarafanov tells him his whole life, opens his soul: his wife left him because she thought he spent too many nights playing the clarinet. But Sarafanov is proud of himself: he did not allow himself to dissolve in vanity, he composes music.

In the morning Busygin and Silva make an attempt to slip away unnoticed, but they face Sarafanov. Upon learning of their departure, he is discouraged and upset, he gives Busygin a silver snuff-box as a souvenir, since, according to him, in her family she always belonged to her eldest son. A touched impostor announces his decision to stay for a day. He helps Nina clean up in the apartment. Between him and Nina established a strange relationship. They seem to be a brother and sister, but their mutual interest and sympathy for each other clearly do not fit into the related framework. Busygin asks Nina about the groom, involuntarily releasing jealous taunts in his address, so that between them there is something like a quarrel. A little later, Nina will also jealously react to Busygin’s interest in Makarska. In addition, they are constantly turning to the conversation about Sarafanov. Busygin reproaches Nina for the fact, that she was going to leave her father alone. Worries them also brother Vassenka, who keeps trying to escape from home, believing that no one here is not needed.

Meanwhile, Vasenka, encouraged by the unexpected attention of Makarska, who agreed to go with him to the cinema, comes to life and is no longer going to leave anywhere. However, his joy does not last long. At Makarska, at ten o’clock, a date is scheduled with Silva, who has attracted her. Learning that Vasenka had bought a ticket for the same time, she refuses to go, and on Vasenkino naive obstinacy admits indignantly that her unexpected kindness is due to her dad. In desperation, Vassenka gathers a backpack, and Busygin, who has just intended to depart, is again forced to stay.

In the evening appears with two bottles of champagne fiance Nina pilot Kudimov. He’s a simple and open guy, a good-natured and all-perceiving is too straightforward than even proud. Busygin and Silva every now and then joke about him, to which he only smiles good-naturedly and offers a drink, so as not to waste time. He does not have enough time for him, he, the cadet, does not want to be late, because he promised himself never to be late, and his own word for him is the law. Soon Sarafanov and Nina appear. The whole company drinks for acquaintance. Kudimov suddenly begins to remember where he saw Sarafanov, although Busygin and Nina

Trying to prevent him, convincing him that he could not see him anywhere or saw him in the philharmonic society. Nevertheless, the pilot, with his inherent adherence to principles, persists, and in the end he remembers: he saw Sarafanov at the funeral. Sarafanov is bitterly forced to admit this.

Busygin calms him: people need music and when they have fun, and when they miss. At this time Vasenka with a backpack, despite attempts to stop him, leaves his home. The bridegroom of Nina, in spite of her persuasions, is also rushing off, afraid to be late to the barracks. When he leaves, Nina reproaches her malicious brother for not treating her fiancé badly. In the end, Busygin can not stand it and admits that he is not his brother Nina. Moreover, he seems to be in love with her. Meanwhile, the offended Sarafanov gathers a suitcase to go along with his eldest son. Suddenly he runs in with the frightened-solemn look of Vasenka, followed by Silva in half-burnt clothes, with a soiled face, accompanied by Makarska. It turns out that Vasenka was singing her apartment. Outraged Silva requires trousers and, before leaving, at the door vindictively informs, that Busygin is not Sarafanov’s son. At all this makes a great impression, but Sarafanov firmly declares that he does not believe. He does not want to know anything: Busygin is his son, and besides, his beloved. He offers Busygin to move from the hostel to them, although it meets Nina’s objection. Busygin calms him: he will visit them. And then he discovers that he was late again on the train.
