Summary “The son of an artilleryman” Simonov

The poem “Son of the artilleryman” Simonov can be divided into five parts. The first is devoted to the description of the friendship of the two majors, Deyev and Petrov. Both fought together in the Civil War with the Whites, then served in the artillery regiment. Petrov had a son, Lyonka, who became Deyev’s favorite, the latter, during the absence of his friend, essentially replaced the boy’s father: he taught him riding, he spent time with him.

The second part includes a description of the life of friends in separation: Petrov fought on the southern front, where he died heroically, and Deyev fought in the north, where he learned of the death of his friend late.

The third part tells how Lyonka, now an adult Lieutenant Petrov, is on the service of a major who has since become his commander.

The fourth, culminating part tells of the feat of a young lieutenant in the mountains, when alone, like his prototype, risking his life, gave the coordinates

of the location of the Germans and actually caused fire on himself. And the short final stanzas describe the scene of the encounter between the major and Lyonka, who miraculously survived under terrible crossfire on both sides.

Therefore, the scene in which the major finally looks for his pupil and finds him alive is especially touching.
