Agasfer
The novel has three storylines: the first is a narrative that is conducted on behalf of the angel Agasphere, whose name means “Beloved of God”; 2 nd – a story about the life path of Paulus von Eichen, a younger contemporary of Martin Luther; 3rd – correspondence between Professor Siegfried Baifus, Director of the Institute of Scientific Atheism in East Berlin (GDR) and Professor Johanaan Leuchtentrager of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
The immortal spirits Agasfer and Lucifer, created by God on the first day, were cast from heaven for refusing to bow to Adam, who was created before their eyes from dust and four elements. Their ways diverge, for Agasfer, unlike Lucifer, who yearns for the complete destruction of all created things, hopes that the world can be changed. From now on, he is doomed to wander the earth to the Last Judgment.
Agasfer tries to convince the rabbi Yeshua, who believes that he is the Son
Ahasfer knows everything that Yeshua expects: Judas’ betrayal, judgment, crucifixion, death and resurrection, after which he will ascend to God. But this, as is known to Agasfer, will not change anything in a world so foolishly arranged. Agasfer meets Lucifer, who, playing the greed of Judas Iscariot, inspires him to betray his teacher if he himself wants Judas to betray him. Agasfer rebukes Yeshua in passivity and predicts that after his death his teaching will be corrupted and in the name of love they will do cruelties and injustice. Lucifer urges Agasphere to go to Yeshua and ask him what he achieved by taking on the sins of the world, for the world did not become better after his martyrdom. The agassphere violates the heavenly rest of the Son of Man and calls him to account, but he still claims that the truth is in God, although Agasfer sees that his faith in the wisdom and justice of the Father is shaken.
Agasfer and Yeshua go in search of God. They wander in the boundlessness of Sheol and meet the ancient old man, who writes on the sand the letters of the Book of Life, and the wind immediately blows them away. This old man is God. He has long been disappointed in his Creation: it lives by its own laws and there is no way to change anything in this terrible world that has become unrecognizable even for him, his Creator. The Son of Man is indignant that the Father sent him to the cross of the cross, knowing in advance that it would be in vain. The Son of Man goes to war with sacred foundations, and Armageddon, the last battle on earth, begins. Four horsemen gallop behind the Son of Man, who are called Fire, War, Hunger and Death, followed by the hordes of Gog and Magog and the angels of the abyss, cast down from heaven on the sixth day of Creation together with Lucifer and Agasphere,
Lucifer and Agasfer watch the preparations for the battle. Stars are falling from the sky, opening the depths of the abyss, the whole earth is burning, people are hiding in caves and mountain gorges, but death is also catching them there. The Son of Man with his army crosses the heavens, rising ever higher in search of a new Jerusalem, built of jasper and pure gold, but it is nowhere to be found. When his army begins to grumble. The Son of Man declares that God has failed and fled, and from now on He, the Son of Man, has become God and will create a new heaven and a new earth, a kingdom of love and justice, where man will not be an enemy to man. But all laugh at the naive words of the Son of Man: the four horsemen, Gogi and Magog, and all seven heads of the Antichrist. There is the infernal laughter of Lucifer, and the very same old man who wrote the Book of Life appears. The Son of Man is trying to kill him with a sword, but the old man tells him that the Son is the likeness of the Father and is inseparable from Him. The Elder becomes so huge that all of his being can fit in his right hand, and utters His Name, the secret name of God. Studios Paulus von Eicen heading to Wittenberg to study with Luther and Melanchthon gets to know at the inn with a certain Hans Leuchtentrager (the German name Leuchtentrager is identical to the meaning of the name Lucifer: the light-bearing light-bearer) who becomes his constant companion and valuable adviser for all life of Eicene. But Agasfer only mocks at the stupidity and religious prudishness of Eicene, for which he exposes him to cruel torture. The agasfer, beaten with spinach, dies, and Eicen hopes that he finally got rid of the annoying Jew. It takes many years, but Agasfer, as young and mocking as, and at the first meeting, again appears before the aged Eicen. Together with Leuchtentrager, who no longer hides that he is Lucifer, the Lord of the Underworld, Agasfer, takes the soul of Eicene, reading to him the words of the prophet Ezekiel, exposing the bad shepherds.
Professor of the Hebrew University Johanaan Leichtentrager enters into correspondence with Siegfried Weifus and informs him that he is personally acquainted with Agasfer, a contemporary of the Rebbe Yeshua, or Jesus Christ. The militant atheist Baifus, who stands on the positions of dialectical materialism, tries to prove to Leuchtentrager that this can not be, but at the end of the correspondence, he suddenly becomes so addicted to the mystery of Agasphere that the “competent authorities” of the GDR, who observe the correspondence of the two professors, finally recommend Bayfus not to respond to letters from Israel: they are worried that Leuchtentrager is going along with his friend Agasfur to come to the GDR and thus persuade the Marxist Bayfus in the real existence of the Eternal Jew, T No less than anyone can prevent their arrival in the GDR. Bayfus locks with Agasfer and Leuchtentrager in his office and, as his wife later says, has been arguing with them about something for a long time. After midnight, a big hole with charred edges is found in the wall of Bayfus’s office, but neither himself nor his Israeli colleagues in the room is found. During the investigation it turns out that the Israeli citizens A. Agasfer and I. Leichtenrager did not receive a visa, and the checkpoints did not register their entry and exit. Later it becomes known that on the night of December 31, 1980, January 1, 1981, on duty from the watch tower at the border crossing at Friedrichstrasse, the attendants observed three unknown persons who were moving through the air. Behind the two stretched a fiery tail, and the third they carried under arms. Violators of the border flew the border of the GDR, after which they gained altitude and disappeared from sight.
