Summary of “Towels with a cock” Bulgakov
The work of M. Bulgakov “Towel with a Rooster” tells the reader about the life of a young doctor in the provinces. According to the distribution after the medical university, he is in the village of Murievo, where he must take the post of chief physician. Before him, this place was occupied by a certain Leopold Leopoldovich, an experienced and knowledgeable doctor. After Leopold Leopoldovich, the hero finds in the hospital a rather rich library – all the shelves are clogged with medical literature, and the number of instruments exceeds all possible expectations of the hero. The thought of the hero most of all takes fear: will he be able to do those operations that will be required. At night, he falls asleep with great difficulty – before her eyes there are hernias, inflammations, tumors, all this has to be either cut or removed.
The next night, everything repeats: fear prevents sleep, the soul of the hero “scrape the cat,” he mentally scolds
A quarter of an hour passes. The girl is still alive. The doctor takes a knife in his hands and begins the operation. Eternal fear disappears somewhere, the operation is successful. But the doctor is waiting for the patient to die – he thinks that because of the large loss of blood, she will not survive. After completing the operation, he with a sigh washes his hands bloodstained on the elbow and hears how the dry cry of the girl’s father is heard in the waiting room… The evening comes, the hospital is quieting down. A young doctor is going to go to his room and asks the paramedic about one thing: “when you die, be sure to send for me.” All evening he sits in the room and with fear awaits that they are about to knock. The knock does not sound… We only knocked after two and a half months. The girl’s father came in. His eyes shone. Then there was a rustle and “on one of two crutches jumped the charming beauty of a one-legged girl.” The doctor writes a referral to Moscow, where she will be given a prosthesis. The girl blushes, and then, hanging on crutches, unfolds the bundle.
In her hands is a “long, snow-white towel with an artless red embroidered cock.” She embroidered this towel all the time that she was lying in the hospital, and hid under the pillow on examinations. The doctor tries to refuse the gift, but in the eyes of the girl there is such sadness that you can not refuse…. Many years later this towel hung in the doctor’s bedroom until it “decayed, faded and disappeared, as memories fade away.” This concludes the work of M. Bulgakov “Towel with a Cock”.
