Characteristics of the characters
Orphan Myo
Orphan Myo The main hero of the story is a little boy named Bosse. From an early age he was brought up in an orphanage, not knowing his origin. The only concern for Bosse was survival. Like all children left without parental care, the boy lives in constant fear. For the defenseless orphan there is no one to intercede. Foster parents not only made life easier for the child, but they made it even harder.
However, during the narrative the character of the boy is gradually changing. Learning that he is Prince Mio, heir to the throne, on which lies the difficult duty to defeat the evil knight, the boy forgets about his helplessness. He has subjects who believe in him, and a father who needs to be protected. The life of the orphan Bosse is filled with a new meaning. Now his concern is not only his own survival. The young prince hopes hundreds of residents of the kingdom. Mio understands that if he does not stop the evil, many children can remain without parents, as he once remained.
The little prince does not tolerate injustice because he himself suffered from it repeatedly. Selflessness, courage and feeling lead the boy to a difficult journey, the goal of which is even more difficult. But Mio realizes that if he does not kill Kato, he can lose his newly found and most precious in life – his father.
Knight Kato
Knight KatoZloi knight, who lives next to the kingdom of Father Mio, all the time invades the peaceful life of the inhabitants of a magical land. As a result, people who have everything they need for happiness can not be happy. The image of the knight embodies in the story not just any particular villain. He is part of the common evil.
In the world from which Prince Mio came, there is no evil knight not because dark wizards live only in fairy tales. Residents of the kingdom, the heir of which will be Mio, resist darkness. The knight does everything possible to break the spirit of these people, but they do not succumb. In the world where the little prince lived, the evil has already won. The most terrible thing is that people did not notice this. Darkness settled in the hearts, winning from the inside. The orphaned parents of Bosse were among the ones who were defeated by evil. Without realizing this, they continue to live their lives, believing that dark forces exist only in children’s tales.
Analysis of the work
Fictional and real
“Mio, my Mio” – not just a fairy tale children’s story. Fairy in this story, in fact, not so much. Residents of a magical land, where a just king rules, represent an ideal society, which everyone dreams about. The friendliness of the inhabitants of the kingdom may seem too implausible. Nevertheless, this is exactly how society should be in any state. And to create an ideal society, it is necessary that every member of this society aspires to an ideal.
The endless struggle between good and evil, presented in the story is quite traditional. It is easy to meet in real life. Given that the story was written just a few years after the end of World War II, it becomes easy to recognize the German Fuhrer in the evil knight of Kato. Kato is a fictional character. Hitler – really existed man, and he did hundreds of times worse than any fairy magician.
Personification of nature
Like the great Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, Astrid Lindgren often resorts to such a device as personification. The writer inspires nature. Trees, grass and leaves hate Kato. Nature symbolizes life, the knight bears death to all living things, which means that it is opposed to it.
The personification of nature is the author’s hint that at difficult times a person should turn to his Mother for help, ask her for protection and forces to move on.
The theme of orphanhood has been touched upon repeatedly by the author. Many characters of the Swedish writer do not have parents or have only one parent. Child loneliness always excited Lindgren. Even a Kid, who lives in a complete family, constantly feels lonely, useless to anyone. He has both a father and a mother, but they are not interested in the inner world of their child. Parents are too busy with their problems.
Mio is brought up in the orphanage. He does not know anything about his parents. He does not know his real name. Perhaps his dream was a family he never had. However, once in the family, the boy continues to be an orphan. Loneliness could teach Mio much. The absence of parents and the inability to receive advice from the elder teach the child to make serious decisions. Like all orphans, Mio is quickly becoming more mature. At a crucial moment, when the young prince is required to defeat evil, he does not back down and defeats Kato.
