Evaine, or Knight with a Lion.
At the Trinity, in the chambers of the noble and kind King Arthur, a brilliant nobleman is feasting. Knights lead a pleasant conversation with the ladies. As everyone knows, in those blessed times ardent tenderness and courtesy were valued above all – nowadays morals have become much rougher, no one thinks about purity, genuine feeling is defeated by falsehood, lovers blinded vice.
One entertaining story replaces another, and here is the word honest Kalogrenan: he wants to tell his friends what he hid before. Seven years ago, the knight had a chance to get into the dense Broselyadsky forest. After a whole day, he saw a small cozy castle, where he was greeted very cordially. The next day he stumbled more often on a shaggy sheepskin shepherd, and he said that in the forest there is a spring near which stands a small chapel and a marvelous pine tree rises. Between the branches on the chain a ladle is suspended, and if you pour a gemstone from it, a terrible storm will rise-someone who returns from there alive can consider himself invincible. Kalogrenan immediately ridden to the source, found a pine with a ladle and caused a storm, which is now very regrettable. Hardly the sky cleared, there was such a terrible rumble, as if ten knights were racing at once. But there was only one – a gigantic appearance and a fierce temper. Kalogrenan suffered a crushing defeat and struggled to reach the hospitable castle
The story of Kalogrenan leads everyone astonished. Messer Ivane swears to avenge the disgrace of his cousin, but the malicious seneschal Kay remarks that it’s easy to brag about after a good dinner and plentiful libations. The queen cuts off the scoffer, and the king announces his decision to go to a wonderful source and invites all the barons to accompany him. Touched by the living, Iwain hurries to get ahead of the other knights: the same evening, he secretly leaves the palace and jumps in search of the Broselyandra forest. After long wanderings, Ivane finds a hospitable castle, then an animal-like shepherd and finally a spring. Further all occurs in full conformity with words of Kalogrenan: the terrible storm rises, then there is an angry giant and with swearing rushes on the stranger. In a desperate fight, Yvane defeats her opponent: the dying knight turns the horse, and Ivaine rushes after him. He bursts into an unfamiliar fortress, and then a secret door-ax breaks into him. Iron slides along the back of the Yvingen, chopping a horse in half:
He himself remains unharmed, but falls into a trap. He is rescued by a beautiful maiden whom Evaine once greeted at the court of Arthur. Wanting to do good for good, she puts a magic ring on his finger so that the vassals of the mortally wounded master of the castle can not find him.
The girl leads the knight into the room, orders to sit on the bed and do not move. Everywhere the squires and pages ransack: they found the chopped horse instantly, but the rider seemed to evaporate. Stiffened on the bed, Evaine looks with admiration at the lady of astonishing beauty who entered the room. The coffin is brought in, and the lady begins to cry, crying to the deceased spouse. On the forehead of a dead man, blood appears – a clear sign that the murderer is hiding very close. The vassals rush about the room, and the lady curses the invisible enemy, calling him a cowardly coward, a pitiful slave and a devil’s offspring. When the funeral ceremony is over, the coffin is carried into the yard. A frightened girl runs in, who was very worried about Yvaine. The knight gazes out the window. Evaine fell a victim of love – he burned with passion for his haters. Always mortally wounded by beauty,
At first the lover knight reproaches himself for his extravagance, but then decides to win a charming lady who pierced his heart. Reasonable girl, guessing about the fervent feelings of Evaine, starts a conversation about him with his mistress: there is no need to lament the dead – perhaps the Lord will send her the best husband who will be able to protect the source. The lady angrily breaks off the confidante, but curiosity proves to be stronger, and she asks which kind of warrior the warrior who overcame her husband belongs to. The girl, who brightened up Ivane’s imprisonment, arranges everything in the best way: the beautiful Lodina agrees to marry a noble knight, the son of King Uriena. The vassals unanimously approve of her choice: she needs a reliable defender – the glory of Ivane is roaring all over the earth, and he proved his strength by defeating the powerful Esquados.
The next morning the news comes that the king is approaching the spring with all his retinue. The evil-tongued Kay shames the missing Evaine and declares that he will fight with the knight who humiliated Kalogrenan. In a short battle, Yvaine, to the delight of the court, bites the scoffer from the saddle, and then invites the king to his castle, to the beautiful wife. Happy and proud Lodina cordially meets the monarch. Observing the intelligent girl who saved Ivaine, Gavain expresses the desire to become the knight of the dark-haired Lunette.
Seven days a feast lasts, but every festival ends, and the king is already on his way back. Gavain accepts to incline the friend to life: it is necessary to be tempered in tournaments to be worthy of the beauty of the wife. Evaine appeals for permission to his wife: Lodina reluctantly lets her husband, but commands
To return exactly in a year. Evaine leaves her beautiful lady with anguish.
The year passes unnoticed; Gavain in every way entertains a friend, starting up battles and tournaments. August is coming: King Arthur calls the knights to a feast, and Evaine suddenly remembers his vow. Despair is no limit, and then to the court is the messenger of Lodina: loudly accusing the knight of treason, she tears off his finger ring and passes the order of the lady not to show her more to her eyes. Evaine loses her sanity from grief: she ransacked her clothes, rushes into the forest, where she gradually becomes wild. One day a sleeping madman finds a noble lady. Ms de Nourisson decides to help the unfortunate: rubs the fairy Morgana with a balm from her head to her feet and puts a rich dress next to her. Having awakened, the cured Evaine hastily covers up the nakedness. Suddenly, he heard the desperate long roar of a lion, who was gripped by a cruel snake. Evaine cuts the crap into pieces, and the lion with a sigh of relief kneels before the knight, recognizing him as his master. The mighty beast becomes the faithful companion and squire of Yvingen.
After two weeks of wandering, the knight again finds himself at a miraculous source and is deprived of feelings of grief; The lion, considering him dead, is trying to commit suicide. Recovering, Evaine sees Lunette in the chapel – slandered and sentenced to death at the stake. There is no one to protect her, for Messer Ivane disappeared, and Messer Gavain went in search of the queen abducted by vile enemies. The knight with the lion promises to stand up for the virgin – he will fight with three opponents at once. Ivane defeated the villains in the eyes of the crowd waiting to be executed. Regal Lodina invites the wounded hero to the castle, but the knight says that he must wander until he redeems the blame before the beautiful lady – without recognizing her husband, Lodina complains about the cruelty of his lover. Evaine finds shelter in the castle of M. de Shaporoz – father of two adorable daughters.
Soon, throughout the country, news spreads about the exploits of the mysterious Knight with a lion: he defeated the evil giant, saved from the death of Gawain’s relatives and defended the domain of Madame de Nourisson. In the meantime, Monsieur de Chaporosis dies, and the elder sister denies
Younger in the right to inheritance. The insidious maiden hastens to enlist the support, and she manages to win over Gawaine, who has already returned to court. King Arthur, displeased with such greed, can do nothing – the undefeated Gavain has no rivals. The younger sister now relies only on the Knight with the lion and sends his girlfriend on his quest. The girl finds a defender of the weak and oppressed: after learning about the wiles of the greedy heiress, Evaine willingly agrees to help. On the way to the royal palace, the Knight with the lion performs another feat: he releases three hundred virgins, captured by two demons, Satanailes, in the Castle of Evil.
The younger sister, meanwhile, is already completely exhausted from grief and despair. The day of the trial is coming: the elder sister demands to solve the case in her favor, since she has a defender, and no one wished for the younger one. Suddenly, an unfamiliar knight appears and, to King Arthur’s great joy, summons Gawaine to battle. The battle begins – a terrible battle, in which, best of friends, without knowing it. They fight to the death: Evaine wants to kill Gavain, Gawain wants to kill Ivan, But the forces of the opponents are equal – they can not win, but they do not want to yield. In vain, the king and the queen try to appeal to the elder sister’s conscience – a stubborn and greedy maid does not want to listen. But with the coming of the night the fight is still interrupted. Opponents enter into a conversation and finally get to know each other. Both are horrified: Evaine is saying, that Gwaine defeated, Gavain begs to be recognized as the victor of Ivaine. The king pronounces a verdict: the sisters must make peace and share the inheritance fairly. Suddenly a huge beast runs from the forest with a loud roar, and it becomes clear to everyone who rumored the Knight with the lion.
The court greeted Yvaine with glee, but he still feels dejected: he can not live without a beautiful Lodina, but he does not hope for forgiveness anymore. Evaine decides to return to the source and again cause a storm. Hearing a rumble of thunder, Lodina trembles with fear. Vassals of her murmur – the castle did not become alive. Reasonable Lunette reminds the lady of the Knight with the lion, and the lady swears to accept him as a protector. The girl immediately leaves for
Spring and finds there Evaine. The knight falls prostrate before his wife. Having learned the guilty husband, Lodina comes to a terrible anger: it is better to endure the daily storms than to love someone who defiantly neglected it. Enthusiastic, Evaine says that she is ready to die in separation, if the heart of the beloved is so adamant. Lodina objects to this that the oath has already been brought: it will be necessary to forgive Yvaine, so as not to ruin the soul. A happy knight encases his wife in a hug. His wanderings ended – love triumphed.
