Summary In the wilderness

In the backwoods

The village of Shalayka stands in the backwoods. All its residents are relatives, everyone wears the name of Shalaev, they are engaged in forest work. Strangers came to the Shalaika rarely, but the soldiers went to the service with tears – in general, the Shalaevs were boiling in their own juice. The only soldier Akintic was in Moscow and was amusing the public with stories about the light city life, but no one believed him, and Grandfather Titus was also angry that he was not working, but only with tongue. 11-year-old Pimka father took for the first time took with him to the kuren to work – extracting wood charcoal. There were workers in a dirty and smoky booth where there was no warmth – only cold or hot, they ate bread and porridge, worked hard. When the lost railwaymen wandered into the kuren and told that soon the railway would lie here, Akintich was happy despite the nagging of the Shalaevites that he would “sell” their cast iron. Soon we spent this very cast iron. The first train was met by the whole village, and Akintich was appointed a watchman at her.
