“No one knows the night” of Brunner in brief

Teenagers Simon and Lydia were neighbors around the house in Copenhagen. The boys in the yard shouted that Lydia had a whore’s mother; Lidia teased and tore them, and she was beaten, and she fought back, and one day Simon, unable to stand it, rushed to the offenders, and everything disappeared, there was only pain, and cries and blood. Then he and Lydia hid in a coal pit and sat for a long time, and when everything was quiet, she led him to the attic… And then they lay close to each other, and both realized that what happened would remain with them forever and no one could this change.

It takes many years, and in the last year of the war, Simon accidentally meets Lydia. Despite the fact that Lydia does not know where expensive cigarettes and silk outfits, in spite of her drunken smile, Simon desperately wants to believe her words about love and the fact that she is safe, although the Gestapo is looking for him and you need to be careful. But, apparently, Lidia still

betrayed him, because on the third night the fascists come to her apartment. Simon manages to leave on the roofs, but runs into a car with policemen, who, as expected in the curfew, open fire on the fleeing man. Simon is wounded in his hand, but, without stopping, runs, runs in the rain and wind, escapes from some dogs, climbs over some fences… His consciousness is muddled… Suddenly he discovers that he is sitting in front of the fashionable mansion, from the windows of which music flows. “

“Stand up,” Thomas says to himself, “Get up and leave your house, which is not your home, away from your married life, which is not a married life…” But, as always, he stays seated and drinking, drinking, and hallucinations begin again, and again he remembers his mother. She tormented Thomas with her love; He could not listen to trust stories about her lovers every night. He locked himself in the room, got drunk, and she pounded at his door and shouted that she would commit suicide. And one day I really swallowed a sleeping pill. It could be saved by simply calling the doctor, but

Thomas did nothing. And now the ghostly demon analysts talk to him about his guilt, and everything is spinning around, and there are failures in consciousness…

Simon was very tired. Lydia gave him away. He will kill her, and then herself. But first we must warn our comrades. I’ll have to ask for help from strangers. Simon goes to the window of the mansion, sees dancing couples in it, and in the corner a drunken man, to whom a woman resembling Lydia and her boyfriend approach.

Gabriel and Daphne are approaching Thomas. His father-in-law and his wife, father and daughter; and Thomas seems that the relationship between them is not completely innocent… Here in their place there is a friend of the house Dr. Felix. Daphne has recently used medical terms often. And to him, Thomas, she does not open the door when he knocks at her in the bedroom. But he still comes. He is not able to break this hell of unreality even with a shot in the temple, although the pistol has long been prepared… I want to hit Felix, but instead Thomas starts talking and jams the doctor with words until he goes… And Thomas has a woman on her lap by the name of Sonya. She talks about how she is humiliated by Daphne and Felix, how she fears Gabriel; Sonia admits Thomas in love, begs her to save… Daphne comes, takes her away, but Thomas does nothing. Gabrielle sits down to him…

Two Germans from the guard service are approaching the mansion. Simon hid in the backyard. The main thing is not to be given up alive. Cold, I want to sleep, my arm hurts…

Gabriel, a successful collaborator, quickly settles the matter with the Germans about an incorrect blackout and continues the conversation with Thomas.

Released from the house with a trash can, the girl stumbles upon Simon. He asks her to call someone from adults who can be trusted. She leaves…

Carried away, Gabriel expounds to Thomas his convictions: the future is for the capital, which will create a new form of dictatorship. Let people believe that they are fighting for freedom – do not take away their beautiful slogans, you just need to use them for your own purposes. In fact, man does not need freedom, but fear. Veshi, money and fear.

Simon, fearing that the girl will melt and overwhelm the matter, convinces herself to remain calm and sound mind, nevertheless for some reason goes… enters the kitchen of the mansion, ..

And yet, Gabriel is not sure about himself, he is unhappy, lonely and afraid of his loneliness. Suddenly, he is affected by a heart attack, and in the last minutes with him there is only Thomas, who left the state of immobility. He hears Gabriel issuing that silent crying that is heard behind the words of each person, and realizes that this crying is meaningless, because enough of a gentle touch to him to appease. And he realizes that the moment has come when he will rise and leave. And then a cry sounds…

One of the maids in the kitchen, seeing a dirty stranger with a gun, loudly screams, and Simon fires at the ceiling with surprise…

Thomas enters the kitchen, approaches Simon. “Hello, brother,” says Thomas.

Gabriel is taken to the hospital. The general attention is so busy with this event that nobody paid attention to the shot, and Thomas can imperceptibly bring the “brother” to himself. He dresses Simon’s hand, gives him food, dresses him out of the dirty clothes of the worker in his own expensive suit, noting in passing that they have the same size, and in general they look like twins. Then Thomas takes Simon to the city, thanks to Ausweiss Gabriel bypassing German posts. He was tired, but never in his life was he so happy.

Simon is not entirely sure whether Thomas can be trusted. And yet, when it’s time to part, he bursts out: “You are better than a senseless death… you must be with us.” He refuses, but when Simon leaves, he becomes so lonely… so empty… as if in oblivion, he cautiously follows the “brother” … walks into the door of a tavern, climbs the stairs… Here he is beaten on the head, and he loses consciousness.

For Kuznets, the leader of a group of underground members, it was a complete surprise that Simon vouches for the unknown why a man who has come, whom he himself does not really know. That’s less for now, he just locks Thomas in the attic. Kuznets has so many problems: we need to send a group of people pursued by the Germans to Sweden, who are now hiding in the tavern; yesterday they could not be sent, and there were no new instructions… But even he has less trouble than Magdalena, the owner of the inn – she needs to wash dishes, prepare food for visitors, feed the underground and take care of her stepfather. And so long ago, so long ago she did not have a man…

It’s cold in the attic. The morning bells ringing. Now Thomas is really drunk, he is on the verge of insanity… Vision? No, this is his brother… “We must go, Thomas, it’s about your life.” Of course, he is delirious, but one must obey his brother… The body does not obey him, he can not go… Simon tries to carry him in his arms, but nothing happens, he is wounded and tired…

When Thomas regains consciousness, next to a woman – a big, maybe too large, – the exact opposite of Daphne. She leaves her food and, leaving, does not lock the attic door – obviously deliberately, so that he can leave – because they want to kill him as an informer. But Thomas does not go away… although of course she will not return… but…

Magdalena runs back and forth, stopping for a moment to say something, to answer, pick up and give away; it is necessary to remake a lot of things, and in all the body some weight… But finally comes the evening, and she again goes to the attic…

Thomas suddenly sees Magdalena next to her, touches her shoulders, hair, chest…

Then they lie, weaving bodies, and each one feels like it’s the first time. Thomas talks about his mother, and Magdalena – that her stepfather was a pimp and used her, half-child, despite the resistance and tears. “And you take care of him?” – Thomas is surprised. “I owe it to myself,” she says, “that’s the only way to overcome it.” And then she falls asleep in his arms.

The stepfather of Magdalena, unattended, finds the keys, makes his way to the tavern hall, lights the lights all over the place, drinks and talks to himself. Two – disguised policemen – break open the door and, deceiving the crazy old man, force him to show where the refugees are hiding.

Appearing with Magdalena in the doorway to the room where the group ready for dispatch hides, Thomas sees a giant who has already managed to put everyone to the wall. Thomas is not armed, but he throws himself at the stranger and takes away his gun. But he managed to shoot – Magdalena was killed.

The smith quickly leads the refugees out of the other staircase. Thomas remains to cover the withdrawal. Simon joins him. In the shootout, Simon is wounded. “Only not alive…” – he says, and Thomas, having understood, kills him. And then comes the turn of Thomas. At the very last moment, when his body is already sewn with a dozen bullets, he has time to think that the tower bells are about to start playing their melody – “The light of life is forever shining…”
