“Cyrano de Bergerac” Rostand in brief summary
In the theater – the premiere, in the main role – a mediocre actor Monfleri. But the poet and the brethren, the Gascon of Cyrano de Bergerac, forbade this “foolish jester” to appear on stage, and, as soon as Cyrano’s menacing voice is heard in the hall, the actor runs away frantically from the stage. In compensation for damage for the torn performance, Cyrano generously gives his last money to the director of the theater. Wanting to teach Cyrano a lesson, a few dandy nobles begin to play a trick on Cyrano. The object of ridicule is the nose of the Gascon – not shining with the beauty of Cyrano is the owner of a huge nose. But in their wretched witticisms Cyrano responds with a brilliant monologue about the noses, then gives one a cheeky slap in the face, and the other causes a duel. As a true poet, he fights, while reciting a poem about his fight, and in front of admiring spectators gets to the enemy “at the end of the parcel.”
The
The perpetually drunk poet Linier comes running in and reports that “on the way to the house” he is surrounded by a hundred hired assassins. After exposing his sword, Cyrano goes to see him off.
To Ragno, confectioner, adoring poets, comes Cyrano. Ragno asks him about yesterday’s battle: the whole of Paris only says that about the valor of Cyrano, who fought with a whole gang of hired assassins and dispersed them. But Cyrano is not disposed to talk about himself: in anticipation of Roxanne, he writes her a letter – a declaration of love.
Comes Roxanne. She informs the cousin that she fell in love with the handsome Christian de Nevilleta. Shocked, Cyrano timidly tries to hint that her chosen
The Guardsmen gather; they require Cyrano’s account of yesterday’s battle. Cyrano begins, but some handsome beginner constantly inserts into his story the word “nose”, which is forbidden in the regiment. Guardsmen, knowing the temper of Cyrano’s temper, whisper: “He will cut him to pieces!”
Cyrano demands to leave them alone. When everyone leaves, he embraces the surprised Christian. Learning that Cyrano is Roxana’s cousin, Christian begs to forgive him for all the “noses” and admits that he loves his cousin. Cyrano reports that Christian’s feelings have found a response in the heart of the girl and she expects a letter from him. Roxane’s request frightens Christian: he is one of those “whose speeches are not able” in the girls “to arouse love, to touch their dreams.” Cyrano invites Christian to become his mind and first gives him a letter written to Roxane, but not yet signed, Christian agrees and puts his name. Entered Guards, waiting to see minced meat from Christian, are unspeakably surprised, finding the opponents peacefully conversing. Deciding that “the demon became more of a lamb than a lamb,” one of them pronounces the word “nose”
With the letters of Cyrano Christian, the love of Roxanne’s capricious is winning. She appoints him a night date. Standing under the balcony, Christian something incomprehensibly babbling, and Roxana is ready to leave. Cyrano comes to the aid of the enamored handsome man. Hiding among the leaves, he whispers the delightful words of love, loudly repeated by Christian. Enchanted by the verses of Cyrano, Roxanne agrees to give the lover a kiss.
Roxanne’s love is also sought by the powerful Count de Guiche, commander of the regiment, where Cyrano and Christian serve. De Guiche sends a capuchin to Roxane with a letter, where she asks her to see him before leaving for the war. Roxane, while reading the letter, changes its contents and convinces the monk that it contains an order to marry her with Christian de Nevillette. While the holy father is performing a marriage ceremony, Cyrano, wearing a mask, plays a madman out of himself to detain de Guiche. Finally the procedure is complete, and the tired Cyrano discards an unnecessary more mask. Convinced that he was deceived, the enraged de Guiche orders Cyrano and Christian to immediately go to the barracks: at dawn the regiment marches on a campaign. “Until the wedding night, they are quite far away! ..” – he adds mockingly, looking at Christian, who has embraced Roxana.
Advanced. The regiment of Gascon guardsmen is surrounded on all sides by the enemy. The soldiers are starving. Cyrano does his best to keep the spirit alive in them. He himself, without the knowledge of Christian, every morning makes his way through enemy posts to send another letter to Roxane: Christian promised to write to her every day…
Suddenly, Roxana comes to the camp; the words “I’m going to a friend’s heart!” served her with a password, and the enemy missed her carriage. Embracing the amazed Christian, Roxanne admits: his “wonderful letters” transformed her, and if at first “in her frivolity” she fell in love with him for her beauty, but now she is “carried away” by the “beauty of the invisible”: “I would remain faithful to my love, at the beck and call of some sorceress, all your beauty has disappeared! .. “Christian in horror: Roxanne’s confession means that she loves not him, but Cyrano. Christian tells all about Cyrano and is going to confess to Roxane in his deception. A ghost of happiness flashes before Cyrano. But the enemy bullet fights Christian, and he dies in Roxanne’s hands, before she has anything to say. On his chest Roxanne finds a farewell letter, written on behalf of Christian desperate Cyrano. Roxane’s grief is boundless, and the noble Cyrano decides to keep Christian’s secret. Ten years passed. Roxana lives in a monastery and is mourning. Once a week, always at the same time, she is visited by Cyrano – she tells her the latest news. The poet is poor, he made a lot of enemies, and then one day “a terrible log fell suddenly from a window and a head broke there passed by chance Cyrano.” The misfortune happens on the day when Cyrano usually visits Roxane. and then one day “a terrible log fell suddenly from the window and broke his head there passed by chance Cyrano.” The misfortune happens on the day when Cyrano usually visits Roxane. and then one day “a terrible log fell suddenly from the window and broke his head there passed by chance Cyrano.” The misfortune happens on the day when Cyrano usually visits Roxane.
Roxane is surprised – Cyrano is late for the first time. Finally, the deathly pale de Bergerac appears. After listening to the playful reproaches of his cousin, he asks her to allow him to read the farewell letter of Christian. Forgotten, he begins to read it aloud. Roxanne looks at Cirano in amazement: it’s getting dark in the street… Then she finally realizes what role Cyrano voluntarily plays for ten children… “So why did you suddenly decide to break the seal of your seal today?” she asks desperately. Cyrano takes off his hat: his head is tied. “On Saturday, September the sixteenth day, the poet de Bergerac was killed by a villain’s hand,” he says in a mocking tone. “Oh, my God, I’ve loved one my whole life, and now I’m losing this dear creature again!” – wringing his hands, exclaims Roxanne. Cyrano, having snatched the sword,
