1891-1953

Among the largest Soviet composers, Prokofiev is one of the first. His rich artistic heritage was widely recognized in the Soviet Union and abroad. Prokofiev left more than 130 works, including 8 operas, 7 symphonies, oratorios and cantatas, instrumental concerts and ensembles, numerous piano works, romances, songs, music for theater and cinema. In his best works, marked by depth of content, inexhaustible imagination, vivid originality, high artistic skill, Prokofiev continues and develops the traditions of Russian classics.

His music, full of optimism, is characterized by energy and energetic rapidity of development, elastic rhythms, the breadth of melodic breathing, pure, light lyricism, features of a sublime epic.

Sergei Sergeevich Prokofiev was born on April 23 (new) in 1891 in the village of Sontsovka b. Ekaterinoslav province. Already in his early childhood, his rare talent was attracted by SI Taneev, RM Glier,

and AK Glazunov. Since 1904, Prokofiev studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, which he graduated in 1909 as a composer (studied at NA Rimsky-Korsakov and AK Lyadov), and in 1914 as a pianist. In the conservative period Prokofiev’s fruitful artistic career began. Juvenile compositions – The First Piano Concerto (1911), The Classical Symphony (1917), as well as performances in concerts as a pianist discovered the original talent, courage and novelty of the thought of a great artist. Prokofiev’s art attracted a warm sympathy from AM Gorky and VV Mayakovsky.

From 1918 to 1932 Prokofiev lives abroad, where he creates operas Love for Three Oranges (1919) and The Fiery Angel (1927), Ballet Son (1928), Second, Third and Fourth Symphonies, three piano concertos and other works. Upon his return to his homeland, the generous talent of Prokofiev flourished with particular completeness. Prokofiev then resurrects the glorious pages of Russian history, creating majestic paintings staggering with deep drama, then appealing to the exciting topics of modern times, interpreting them humanistically, life-affirming. Among his best works are ballets Romeo and Juliet (1936), Cinderella (1945), Stone Flower (1950), operas Semen Kotko (1939), Duenya (1940), Tale of a Real Man “(1948),” War and Peace “(1953), the cantata”

Prokofiev died on March 5, 1953 in Moscow.
