The Tegner’s “The Fritjof Saga” in brief
The name of the ancient Scandinavian hero – Frithiof consists of two parts: fridh – peace, peace and thjofr – a thief, that is, means “The thief of the world”. The main source of the poem is the Old Norse saga of Fridtjof Smel, which developed in the late 13th or early 14th century. It tells about events, to a large extent, the legendary events that took place in Norway in the 9th c. Each of the 24 songs of the poem is written by its own, special size, organically related to the emotional tone of this song.
The kind, wise bond Hilding brought up the daughter of King Ingeborg and Fridtjof, the son of the Thorsten bond. Ingeborg was beautiful, like Freya, the goddess of beauty and love. Fridtjof missed Ingeborg, and he decided to go to the kings. In the North, Kung Ring ruled the country wisely. The country flourished, there “gold shone in the sun of the field”, “And love fed the country to Ring”. Old Ring, although he knew that he had “already faded away, and for a long time,” decided to marry Ingeborg. And then Ring ordered for an insult “mark with a sword.” And the war came to Helge’s house, he hid his sister in the Balder’s temple, where she was sitting alone, “love is faithful, / In tears, as in the lilies of the lily.” Knowing which Fritjof is a brave and courageous warrior, Helge sent old Hilding to him. But the proud Frithiof did not forget the offense he had suffered and refused to help the sword with the brothers-konung.
Fridtjof began to visit his beautiful Ingeborg at the Balder’s temple at night, although he knew perfectly well that in this temple a man does not have the right to meet a woman. Fridtjof came to the Thing, held out Helge’s hand as a sign of reconciliation, because it was not the time to quarrel, the enemy was on the threshold. Fritjof is ready to fight, but on condition that he marries Ingeborg. All those gathered began to ask Helga to marry her sister for a bond, he is worthy of it. Kung said that Fridtjof met Ingeborg in the temple of Balder. Fritjof did not dare to lie. He confirmed the words of Helge. The crowd, still so favorably disposed towards Frithiof, “turned white”. According to the law of ancestors, the hero had to be “expelled or killed by death,” but Helge suggested that he go to the Angantir, who used to pay tribute, and after the death of Bela ceased. Angantir as the legendary evil dragon Fafnir protects his gold, but Fridtjof should prove to everyone that he is able not only to “the virgins in the temple head to circle.”
Fridtjof suggests Ingeborg to leave on his “Ellis” to the south, to Greece, about the beauty of which he told his father, where they will live happily and happily. But Ingeborg refuses, her destiny to be a “submissive victim of a brother”, she does not want to kidnap “from the skald songs” the heroic name of Fridtjof, they must submit to Norma in order to “dignity to save.” They part, but Ingeborg swears that he will never forget his beloved. Fridtjof gives Ingeborg his wrist, asks him not to forget, he will soon return, he will get Helge and gold and then ask not for kung, but for the people to allow him to marry her. And Fridtjof goes on “Ellis” to Angantir. His ship proved that it was really built by the gods and stronger than all the evil forces that Helge had let on them. The exhausted team of Fridtjof descended to the shore, Angantir immediately recognized his friend’s son, since “in the whole region of the midnight / This is just him alone.” But the warrior Utley decided to check whether Frithiof really is not afraid of the fight “and pacifies steel.” Fritjof fought valiantly and conquered the hearts of all with his courage. In the spring, Fridtjof returned home, but instead of home – ashes. Old, kind Hilding told what happened during this time. And Ingeborg became Ring’s wife. The spiteful Helge tore off “from the virgin your ring”. Fridtjof was saddened and angry, He decides to deal with Helge himself and with his faithful twin brother Vjern goes to the Balder temple, where “the fire of the sacred” burned all night “-” the image of the sun. ” Fritjof burst into the temple. After the death of the kung, the people on the Thing wanted to select Fridtjof with their kung and see him next to Ingeborg. But the honest, noble Frithiof replied that until he could not agree to this, since he burned the temple of God and “God still blazes angry / and full of resentment.” He must first restore the temple. Fridtjof restores the beautiful temple of Balder, in this magnificent temple and “human revenge, and anger quietly melted.” But the priest believed that there was not enough to build a temple, we must reconcile ourselves to our enemies, “and with God the Light you will be reconciled then.” Helge died, because he dared, fighting with the Finns, enter the sacred temple of Yumala – the supreme deity of the Finns.
