The play “Brother Gilbert” in brief


A young woman complains to the kuma that her elderly husband is not able to extinguish the flame of her love passion. Kuma advises her to seek solace on the side and have a lover. Their conversation is eavesdropped by a monk, Brother Gilbert, a libertine and voluptuary. He offers the old man’s wife his services and assures her that she will not regret if she agrees to give him a date. She invites him the next day, when her husband leaves for the bazaar. The monk comes at the appointed time, but the old man returns unexpectedly behind the sack. The wife hides his brother Guilbert under the chest of drawers, and he lies down on the same bag, behind which the old man returned. Taking the bag of a monk hanging on a nail, he takes them and leaves. The frightened monk also wants to leave, but discovers his missing pants. Wife in despair, she does not know what to do, and goes for advice to the goddess. She calms her down and says, that he can circle his husband around his finger. Having

met an angry old man, she convinces him that the pants he found in his house are sacred, for they were worn by Saint Francis.
