Augustin Eugene Scribe, August 25, 1791, Paris – February 21, 1861, ibid.) Is a French playwright, specializing in comedies and vaudevilles. In Russia is known primarily for the play “A glass of water.” In 1979 the play was screened by Yulia Karasik.
Distinguished by extreme performance and productivity (more than 150 plays), a good thoroughness of intrigue in the plays. He often worked with co-authors (Melesville, Ernest Leguwe, Jean Francois Bayard). Most of his works turned out to be one-day, although a few things still remain in the repertoire. He did not adhere to literary trends, he did not participate in the literary battles of “romantics” and “classics”.
In 1834, Scribe was elected to the French Academy in the place of Antoine Arnault. After his death, the place went to Octave Feye. To the election of Scribe, Pushkin dedicated a separate publication, which included the translation of Scrib’s speech, which he called “brilliant”, and its author – “the representative of French wit.”
About 130 Scribe’s plays and about 20 opera libretto have been translated into Russian.
