Soon after arriving in Orel Nikandra is determined to serve. After a while, a letter comes from Prostakov, informing me that Prince Svetlozarov made a proposal to Katerina. For Elizabeth meanwhile one of the neighbors, an elderly, but sufficiently well-off, is wooing, she does not want to hear about it either. In conclusion, Prostakov asks for advice from the prince.

After the letter, the prince himself arrives. In his presence, and a conversation begins, which Prostakov himself did not dare start. In the name of Prince Chistyakov, Svetlozarov is covered with deathly pallor. “I hid in the house of robbers, vagabonds and impostors!” – With these words, Prince Svetlozarov leaves the family of the Prostakovs, leaving them in turmoil. He went to Moscow and walked for a while, stopping in different villages. But one of these lodgings was strangely interrupted. The new guests – Prince Svetlozarov and his wife – were present. He found a fellow traveler, the son of a Fategian priest, who had fled from a cruel, sparse father with his money. Soon they were caught up by a cart, in which Sylvester saw his Fatezh persecutors and disappeared, and not so prudent the prince was transferred to Fatezh instead, where he experienced the power of justice: they recognized the mistake, but deprived him of all property.
The fascinating story of Gavril Simonovich is interrupted: one fine evening the prince goes out for a walk in the field and does not return by night. The next day the house is a police officer with the team and reports that the prince is a terrible robber.

Resting, he is going to go to the Prostakov, in order to protect them from the new outrage of the villain. But on the very day of his departure, Nikandr receives a letter from Prostakov stating all that has happened and asking him, in case of a prince’s discovery, to inform the police. Nikandr, in confusion, passes the letter to the prince. Poor Gavrilo Simonovic is shocked by the distrust and frivolity of a friend. He decides to open a story and his name, even if slandered, to Prichudin, which leads to unexpected consequences. It turns out, that it was Prichudin who once kidnapped the son of the prince, Nikandra. The ancestors of Prichudin belonged to the same Chistyakov family. Being rich and not having male heirs, he decided to make a poor relative “a participant in his wealth” and kidnapped him. Tears of joy are added to the penitent tears of the old man, when it becomes clear that it is Nikandr who is the son of Prince Chistiakov. Inspired, “like Apuleius Psyche”, curiosity, the prince decided to open the face of his beloved and – found his general.
He was forced to leave the house, rented an apartment and became addicted to the theater. This predilection was the reason for his further adventures, for once in the actress Fiona, who came from St. Petersburg, he recognized his wife, Fekla Sidorovna. The thirst for revenge seized him. In the tavern he got along with two young people. One of them turned out to be Sylvester, the son of the priest Avksentiya. The other is none other than the deceiver of Feklusha, Prince Svetlozarov (his real name, however, was Golovorezov, which he confesses, not knowing who is before him). Seeing Feklushu “on the Faith”, he again persuaded her to flee and invited Chistiakov to help him. Here it is, long-awaited revenge. Having learned all the details, the prince went to Prince Latron and opened a plot to him. The criminals were seized and subjected to execution, but the prince’s reward was imprisonment. Having fled, he was again in a deplorable state, when he was picked up by Mr. Dobroslavov. His new post was to sort out complaints and inquire, for Dobroslavov was not only a lover of charity, but sought to exercise it wisely in order to maintain virtue, but not to encourage vice. The story is interrupted by the departure of Prichudin, and then Nikandr, who on behalf of the governor finally reveals Prince Svetlozarov, having done this just on his wedding day with Katerina. Katerina is getting married, and the Prostakovs are moving to the city, which Prince Gavrilo and Nikandr regretfully learn. Upon the return of Prichudin, the prince continues the story.
Disrupted by the help of the prince, the farmer Kuroumov brought the police to the meeting. Justice did not favor philanthropists, but the prince managed to escape along with his beautiful Lykoris. After some time he received a letter from Feklushi. She was less fortunate, and she was in the hands of justice. But in the supreme judge she recognized Prince Latron, who had forgiven her, and at the same time her brother, whom she called the prince. His mercy extended further. He suggests the prince to follow him to Poland.
On the way to the prince many adventures awaited, but at last he reached Poland. Prince Latron gave him the place of gatekeeper, but eventually, using all his cunning, cruelty and resourcefulness, he became a secretary and achieved wealth. Many people were ruined by his efforts. Lycoris died. Feklusha, confessing to the prince in the newly flared passion and having been refused, retired to the monastery. And the power and excesses of the prince all multiplied. But they also came to an end. After the death of Prince Latron, Gavrilo Simonovic is sent to prison, and then again appears on the road.
This time, fate brought him with a man whom everyone simply calls Ivan. His righteous life earned him universal respect. With such a fellow traveler, Prince Gavrilo advanced to his native lands. In the monastery, on the way, he met a penitent wife. A few months later received news of her death.
In Falaleevka he was expected to meet with Yanka, brought by Falaleev’s princes and “merciful justice” to a miserable state. The prince managed to heal an old friend and for a while to remove his demise. But here they set fire to the hut in which Gavrilo Simonovic and Yanka lived. Yanka, considering himself guilty, died of grief, and the prince again left his native village.
Meanwhile, Nikandr becomes a participant in the events almost romantic. Once he happens to help a poor woman who did not want to name the people she helped in turn. Intrigued, he and her father watch her, and to the prince her voice resembles the voice of his last wife, whom he married under unusual circumstances: when he left Falaleevka, the prince was imprisoned in an carriage by an unknown footman in a rich livery and taken to the estate where the proprietress, a young lady, invited him to marry. But immediately after the ceremony he was again dressed in his former clothes and thrown into the woods. According to the servants’ conversations, he realized that his new wife was the mistress of Prince Svetlozarov
The prince tells this story to Nikandru and Prichudin, finishing his life story. It turns out that his wife is Prichudin’s daughter, Nadezhda.
Nikandr is looking for a stranger and, having got to the cemetery, where they first met, again shows himself a knight. Again he manages to prevent the removal of the girl, who turns out to be Caterina, his sister Elizabeth. The next day he accidentally meets Katerina’s husband, Firsov, in the forest and rescues him from suicide. He learns about the cramped circumstances of the family. Nikandr again sees his adored Elizabeth, and now circumstances allow her to think about it. But Haritina, the wife of Prince Gavrila, had already disappeared for a week.
