Summary of “The Invisible Man” by Wells


Peru, the famous writer of the twentieth century, Herbert Wells, owns many works, including the novel Invisible Man. Characters of the novel: Griffin is a scientist and protagonist of the narrative, Dr. Kemp, vagabond Marvel.

The work begins with the description of the tavern Kucher and horses, owned by Mrs. Hall and her henpecked husband. In early February a mysterious stranger appeared in the tavern, wrapped from head to foot. In winter it is difficult to get a guest, and the stranger also generously pays. The hosts agree to settle it.

His behavior seems more strange, more and more alarming to others. He is very irritable, avoids communication with others. When he eats, he covers his mouth with a napkin. His head is all wrapped in bandages. In addition, it is not known what he does. From his room always smells of some chemical drugs. The mysterious stranger is called Griffin. He seeks to regain his former state, become visible, but fails because of failure. He runs out

of money, and the owners do not want to feed him for free. Then, using his invisibility, he goes on a robbery. Of course, suspicion first falls on him. Griffin is gradually losing his mind. Hungry and exhausted, one day he takes a crazy step: in front of everyone tears off his disguise. It dissolves in the air. Surroundings in a shock.

The first pursuit of the Invisible ends for him safely. In addition, fleeing from the pursuit, Griffin encounters a tramp Marvel, a lover of alcohol. The invisible explains to Marvel that he is just as outcast, so he must be helped. We need to get clothes and money. Marvel fulfills all the requirements of the Invisible, although he realizes his dependence on such a dangerous subject.

The city is a holiday. A Nevidimka decided to part with the rout. At the same time, Marvel all rushes to escape, but he stops a lot of coins in his pockets and, of course, fear of the Invisible.

And Dr. Kemp sits quietly in his office and is engaged in

scientific work. In a friend through the window he sees a man running down the street with a pile of books. The runner hides first in one zucchini, and then at the police station. At this time, someone rings the door of Kemp’s apartment. But when the doctor opens, there is no one outside the door. And the invisible visitor is already in the office. On linoleum blood. The bed is crumpled in the bedroom… And then he hears a voice: My God, it’s Kemp. As it turns out later, Griffin and Kemp studied at the same university.

But what happened to Griffin? Already being Invisible, he chased poor Marvel, who disappeared into a tavern Merry Cricket. But due to the fact that the whole city knows about the existence of the Invisible, one of the visitors of the vegetable marrow starts to fire at the door. One of the bullets falls into Griffin’s hand.

… Griffin’s career is not the best way. An ingenious scientist, he discovered the method becomes invisible. But the fear that his discovery will be appropriated by less gifted people makes Griffin keep everything a secret. However, the lack of money soon pushes him to the first crime. He robbed his father, taking money from him. Because of this, the father ends his life by suicide. Griffin decides to run and for this he becomes invisible. Becoming invisible, Griffin experiences many inconveniences. The dogs pursue him barking, the cabmen are knocked down. But his eyes get the shop, in which the make-up accessories are sold. Her owner is a hunchback, whom the Invisible knits into a sheet and deprives him of the opportunity to escape. Further, Griffin sets fire to the house, destroys all his preparations, then leaves. Now we must learn to go from the invisible to the visible state,

Appearing at Dr. Kemp, Nevidimka suggests that he become an accomplice. Kemp understands that before him – a dangerous fanatic, and reports the invisibility to the police. The invisible runs away. But they are looking for him according to the plan drawn up by Kemp. The roads are strewn with pounded glass, the doors and windows of the houses are locked, dogs are everywhere rummaging. The invisible is hunted. However, he wants to take revenge on Kemp. One day he chases the doctor down the street. Fortunately, Kemp is in the crowd of fellow countrymen. Then Griffin is waiting for the end. The inexorable crowd is straightened out with him. Gradually, all before our very eyes appears the whole wounded man: Griffin is invisible while he is still alive.

And Mr. Marvel bought with money, stolen from Nevidimka zucchini Funny cricketers. Every evening he locks himself away from the people and tries to unravel his mystery from Griffin’s books. While this he does not succeed.
