Summary of the “Case”
After the marriage, Dr. Watson rarely sees Sherlock Holmes. One evening a great detective comes to his faithful friend and talks about the London professor of mathematics, Professor Moriarty. Professor – Napoleon of the underworld, entangled his web all over London. He prepares crimes, extracts money from them, finds performers. Moriarty himself is invulnerable, since it is impossible to prove his involvement in crimes.
The great detective entered into a struggle with the professor. Moriarty also advised Holmes to abandon the fight, warning that, having destroyed him, the great detective would perish himself.
You hope to defeat me – I tell you that you will never succeed. If you have enough skill to destroy me, then I assure you, you yourself will perish with me.
Having received a refusal, Moriarty made several attempts on Holmes, and now, after handing over all the threads of the police, the great detective decides to leave for the time to continental
Having confused the traces, my friends find themselves in Geneva. There, Holmes learns that the whole gang has been arrested, only the professor has escaped the police. Returning to London Moriarty is dangerous, but he will take revenge on Holmes.
Walking through the picturesque alpine villages, Holmes does not forget about the danger. The great detective again and again repeats that he would gladly stop his activities if the society were spared from Professor Moriarty. He looks back on his life with a feeling of deep satisfaction, because thanks to him the air in London has become purer.
Friends visit the Reichenbach Falls. Dr. Watson receives a letter in which he is urgently called to the hotel to help the patient. The doctor returns to the hotel, leaving a friend alone. Having found out that there was an error, he runs to the waterfall. There he finds a note from Holmes – he says that he must meet with Professor Moriarty and finally find out the relationship.
My dear Watson, “the note said. “I am writing these lines to you, thanks to the courtesy of Mr. Moriarty, who is waiting for me to finalize the issues concerning both of us.
Inspection of the scene shows that both of the enemy fell into the abyss, and Dr. Watson remembers his friend as the most wise and noble of all known to him people.
