Birds
Thirty-seven-year-old Mattis, from the point of view of others, a foolish fool, lives on the shore of a forest lake with his 40-year-old sister Hege. Lately relations between them are not going well. Tired of the daily need to think about how to feed themselves and their brother, from morning till night, knitting the crochet (the only source of funds), cleaning the house, preparing food, Hege was annoyed by Mattis’s fantasies, which, it seems to her, from inactivity. Mattis has something on his mind, then on the tongue. And today they are sitting on the porch of their dilapidated house. Hege, as always, knits, and Mattis dreamily looks somewhere in the forest. Suddenly he joyfully informs his sister that she sees her gray hair – it’s so interesting! Heghe could not hold the destructive gaze: the other one would have thought about where she got those gray hair!
In the evening with Mattis, a miracle happens: he is witnessing how
At night Mattis sees a beautiful dream: he became a handsome, strong, courageous guy. Sleeves with a crash burst from muscles, when he bends his hand. His head is full of words that girls like to hear so much. Birds call him into the forest – and from there comes out to him a beautiful girl, his girlfriend – she was born from an evening draft. In a dream, the hero becomes the owner of three treasures, to which he aspires: mind, power, love.
But the morning comes, and with it Mattis invades reality: Hege with her constant grumbling that Mattis should go to work. How can he work, after all, thoughts that rush after craving will interfere with him! A woodcock is pulling over their house – that’s what he should
Mattis thinks about woodcocks all the time. He pulls over their house in the morning and evening, when people are sleeping. But he, Mattis, can sit at this time on the porch. They are with a woodcock together. Mattis goes to the woods, deciphers the woodcock letters (traces on the bottom of the puddle), writes him the answers. They are with a woodcock together! Finally, someone understands it! Harmony with nature – this is what Mattis is striving for. The hero has wisdom, unknown to the ordinary, “normal” person. He understands the soul of nature, finds in the dialogue with her long-awaited calm.
A woodcock is killed by a hunting hunter, to whom Mattis, in a fit of sincere openness, himself told about the thrust. When Mattis lifts the shot bird from the ground, she looks at him – so it seems to him – then the bird’s eyes tightened the film. Mattis buries a bird under a large stone. Now she lies there, but this last look will always disturb him, reminding her that his happiness is destroyed by evil people who do not understand the wise language of nature. The hero is looking for a simple human love. After all, it is so important – that someone has chosen you in life. But who will choose the Fool? And in Mattis there is so much unspent tenderness. Once he met on the lake with two girls: Anna and Inger. Girls are non-local, so they do not know yet that he is a Fool. They, maybe, and guess about it, but feel kindness, insecurity Mattis, his quivering, careful attitude to them – and yet it was about this attitude of the guys they longed in the depths of their soul. Mattis is doing his best to behave as expected – it’s his first real meeting with the girls. He offers a ride on a boat. He knows: rowing is the only thing that he can do well. He is directing the boat to the bank on which the grocery store is located – now everyone sees that Mattis is perfectly in control of the oars and that he, like a real guy, is riding with the girls on a boat! This case has long lived in Mattis’s memory, giving him pleasure. Mattis is very much afraid that Hege will abandon him. He sees: the sister has changed recently, became irritable, indifferent to him. She forbids looking into her eyes, which means something. More and more often he repeats the phrase: “Do not leave me alone!”
Hege suggests that Mattis take up transportation. With the boat, he manages well – let him on duty on the lake, suddenly someone needs to move to the other side. Mattis is very grateful to his sister for this offer: transportation is the only job that does not interfere with his thoughts, dreams. The hero guesses that his services are unlikely to take advantage of someone, but immediately plunges into this game. He likes to say this word, “carrier.” It’s not so easy to be a carrier – you have to keep up with it, and here. And who knows how to guide a boat more than he does? It is a pity that the track from the boat does not hold on to the water, so if it was visible for several days!
During the thunderstorm, which Mattis fears panicky, there is a misfortune: one of the two dry aspens standing in front of the house in which the heroes live, falls, cut off by lightning. Everyone in the district knows that these aspen are called Hege-i-Mattis. Now one of the aspens fell. But whose? Mattis is full of heavy forebodings, it seems to him that the aspen Hege fell. He is very afraid of losing his sister, sharing her anxiety with her, but she does not want to hear such nonsense.
In the family Mattis and Hege appears stranger – logger Ergen. Mattis himself forwarded it to his bank, Ergen became his only passenger during the time of the carrier’s work. Now the woodcutter lives in the attic of their house, the money that he pays for the room, allows Hege to keep the house in order, to feed himself and his brother. Gradually Mattis begins to notice in Hegah change: it becomes even more indifferent to it, but it blossoms with every appearance of Ergen. Mattis is sure: they will abandon him, now he definitely does not need anyone. He wants to return Hege, leads her to the forest, to their treasured hummock (once they sat next to him and had long conversations about a variety of things), talks about his fears. But Hege, indifferent in her happiness to the pain of others, does not want to know about the experiences of Mattis, she accuses him of selfishness. As he does not understand,
The anxiety of Mattis is growing when Ergen forbade him to transport and took with him to the forest. He wants to teach Mattis how to cut down the forest – this can always make a living. What for? Do they want to quit it? And by what right is Ergen interfering in his life?
Once, during a break in the work, Ergen tells Mattis about the poisonous mushrooms – the fly agarics: from them, in the old days, soup was cooked for those whom they wanted to kill. Depressed to desperation, Mattis tears off one of the fly agarics growing next to him, and eats a large chunk. Ergen is frightened, but soon becomes convinced that nothing happens to Mattis, and he mocks him: one had to eat a whole mushroom, or even one.
Returning home, Mattis sees fly agarics everywhere. They seemed to circle the house with a poisonous ring. But before they were here before? Mattis asks about it from his sister, but she indifferently responds that it was always so.
And now Mattis has a plan. He will wait for good weather and go to the lake. Having swam to a deep place, he will pierce a hole in the hole in the hole of the boat, it will quickly fill with water. And not able to swim Mattis squeezes the oars under his arms. Let nature itself decide: he must die or live with Hege and Ergen.
Mattis is waiting for good weather. At night, he listens as the “good” wind rustles behind the walls of the house, and peace abates. He does not want to go to the lake, but the decision is made, he will not retreat.
And now the wind stopped. At night Mattis heard this, but now he will not go, he never said that he would do it at night. After all, the only passenger during the work of the carrier. And now the wind stopped. At night Mattis heard this, but now he will not go, he never said that he would do it at night. After all, early in the morning the wind can start again. But in the morning Mattis hears the words of Hege: “Today is so quiet…” It’s time to implement the plan.
The further Mattis swam away, the wider his native shore became, which he opened from his place. Everything he saw was dear to him. Temptations prevailed over him, teasing him with transparent air and golden trees. Sometimes he thought: do not look there – and lowered his eyes. He had to restrain himself so that he had the strength to implement the plan.
And the rotten board in the bottom is knocked out, the boat is quickly filled with water. He hung on oars, he floundered in the water, gradually moving in the right direction – to the shore. But suddenly the wind begins – after all, it started that day again! And now the water has come to the excitement, she seems to want him to choke to let out the oars.
“Mattis!” – Turning, he shouted in desperate despair. On a deserted lake his cry sounded like the cry of an unknown bird…
