Sour cream is called the father of new Czech music, Czech Glinka. In his work, the musical genius of the Czech people flourished magnificently, the pictures of Czechia’s history, people’s life and nature revived, the rhythms of folk dances, the melodies of Czech songs captivating in beauty and freshness sounded. The legacy of Smetana is varied. Most of it is made up of operas. The composer also created compositions for the symphony orchestra of the choir, instrumental ensembles and pianoforte. Sour cream has contributed a lot to the development of the Czech musical culture and its broad educational activities.

Bedřich Smetana was born on March 2, 1824 in the small Czech town of Litomyšl. His childhood and youth years coincided with the period of social upsurge in the struggle against the Austrian domination, the oppression of which the people of the Czech Republic have been experiencing for a long time. Since childhood, the young

musician was surrounded by people of advanced, democratic convictions. The musical development of Smetana began very early, for six years he already appeared publicly as a pianist, and at eight he composed the first piano piece.

His active musical and social activities began in Prague, where he moved in 1843. In 1848 a young composer took part in a revolutionary uprising. Under the impression of these events were created “Solemn Overture”, the choir “Song of Freedom”, march for the student and working battalions. Political reaction forced Smetana in 1856 to leave his native land for a while. Returning to Prague in 1861, he became one of the leaders of a society that united artists of the national-democratic trend, organizer and conductor of symphony and choral concerts, the head of the opera house, a prominent music critic.

Smetana’s first opera “Brandenburgers in the Czech Republic” (1863) was also the first national Czech opera. Her patriotic theme was developed in the operas Dalibor (1868) and Libuše (1872), where the great legends and legends of the Czech people

came to life. But the most popular was the comic opera The Sold Bride (1866).

In 1874 Smetan suffered a misfortune: he lost his hearing. The composer courageously suffered a blow to fate, continued to compose and participate in public life. During this period comic operas Two Widow (1874), Kiss (1876), The Secret (1878), The Devil’s Wall (1882), a wonderful cycle of six program-symphonic poems entitled My Motherland “(1879) and the string quartet From My Life (1876). The latest works were written in a difficult struggle with a continuously progressing disease. The forces gradually left the composer.

Smetana died on May 12, 1884 in Prague.
