Several years passed. The hero works for glossy magazines. His life is empty. There are no friends, women come and go. He remembers his Friend and decides to find her. For this, the hero again goes to the hotel “Dolphin”. But everything changed there, as if by magic. In place of the old hotel is a super modern hotel. When asked what happened to the previous owners, the administration responds evasively.
The hero has some relationship with the girl working in the hotel and, through it, he learns that there is a secret place where something is hiding.
This Something is the Man of the Sheep – the episodic character of the previous book. To the Sheep from the previous book, he, in fact, has nothing to do, representing the image of a kind of mental integrity, to which the hero is unsuccessfully trying to return. The Sheepman tells him “dance and do not stop,” which probably means a return to natural words
After visiting the local cinema, the hero watches the film, where his school buddy starred as a movie star in the role of a positive character starred. In the bed scene in an actress playing a prostitute, the hero suddenly recognizes his Friend (she was a whore on call in life). He decides to go home, and meet with a former friend.
A friend turns out to be a nice guy not only in the movies, but in life. Friendly relations are restored. True, where a woman – he does not know, she disappeared. The friend-actor long and tiresomely tells how the world of “developed capitalism” with his vulgarity and invasion of his private life grew disgusted. It turns out that the idol of women’s hearts is deeply unhappy (and in his personal life too). Then Murakami has many episodes that are not directly related to the case. For example – the friendship of the hero with a thirteen-year-old girl, the daughter of bohemian parents with extrasensory abilities.

The hero, in the full splendor of all-forgiveness, is ready to reconcile with his friend. But he, unable to live more, on his elegant “maserati” enters directly into the sea. And our hero again goes to the hotel “Dolphin” and connects with the favorite office girl he liked. According to Murakami, he finally found harmony with the world. “I have achieved individuation,” Jung would say.
