“Counterfeiters” Zhida in brief summary

The scene is Paris and the Swiss village of Saas-Fee. Time is deliberately not specified. In the center of the narrative are three families – Profitandie, Molyneux and Aziza-Wedeli. They are closely associated with the old music teacher Lalerus, as well as two writers – Count Robert de Passavan and Edward. The latter keeps a diary, where he records his observations and analyzes them from the point of view of the future novel, which has already been called “Counterfeiters.” In addition, the text is invaded by the voice of the author himself, commenting on the actions of his characters.

Seventeen-year-old Bernard Profitandier leaves home after learning about his illegal origin. He is convinced that he always hated the man he considered to be a father. However, the investigator Profitandier loves Bernard much more than his own sons – the lawyer Charles and schoolboy Kalu. Both lack the unbridled strength of character that distinguishes Bernard.

Olivier

Molyneux is also delighted with the determination of a friend. Gentle Olivier needs spiritual support: he is deeply attached to Bernard and is looking forward to the return from England of his uncle Edward – the only person in the family with whom you can talk heart to heart. On the eve Olivier became an involuntary witness of a horrible scene: a woman was crying under the door at night – apparently, it was the lover of his elder brother Vincent.

Vincent had a connection with Laura Duvier in a tuberculosis sanatorium, when they both believed that they did not have much time left to live. Laura is pregnant, but does not want to return to her husband. Vincent can not support her, because he has squandered all his money into cards. To the game he was greeted by Count de Passavan, who has his secret reasons. Robert gives Vincent a chance to win back and concedes to his own mistress – Lady Lillian Griffith. Vincent is smart, handsome, but completely devoid of secular polish, and Lillian gladly takes up his upbringing. In return, Robert asks for a small favor: Vincent must bring it together with

his younger brother Olivier.

On the train, Edward looks with annoyance at the recently published book of Passavan – as brilliant and false as Robert himself. Edward re-reads the letter, in which Laura begs for help, and then puts into the diary thoughts about the novel: in the era of cinema from the action should be abandoned.

The long-awaited meeting with his uncle does not bring Olivier joy: both behave in a state of constraint and can not express their overwhelming happiness. Lost by Edward Baggage picks up Bernard. In the suitcase is a diary with records of a year ago. Edward then caught his hand on the theft of the younger of the Molyneux brothers – Georges. Nephews study at the boarding school of Pastor Azais. – grandfather Laura, Rachelle, Sarah and Arman Vedele. Laura returns to the past endlessly – to the days when he and Edward wrote their names on the windowsill. Rachel actually gave up her personal life and is dragging herself to the whole farm. Young Sarah frankly tries to seduce Olivier – no wonder cynical Arman calls his sister a prostitute. In a devout Protestant family, something is amiss, which is why Laura should marry an honest, if not very close, Douvier – because Edward himself is not able to make her happy. Old Aziza very much praises Georges: the lovely children have organized something like a secret society, where only worthy ones are accepted, – the yellow ribbon in the buttonhole serves as a sign of difference. Edward does not doubt that the crafty boy cleverly held the pastor. It’s equally painful to watch La Perouse. The former music teacher is deeply unhappy: he has almost no pupils, his once beloved wife is irritating, the only son is dead. The old man broke relations with him because of his affair with the Russian musician. They left for Poland, but they did not get married. Grandson Boris does not suspect the existence of his grandfather. This boy is the most dear creature to Laleruz. – the yellow ribbon in the buttonhole serves as a decoration. Comparing the story of Olivier with the diary of Edward, Bernard guesses that Laura was sobbing under the door of Vincent. The letter indicates the address of the hotel, and Bernard immediately goes there. Circumstances favor the young adventurer: his audacious self-confidence is pleasing to both Laura and Edward. Bernard receives the post of secretary under Edward. Together with Laura, they travel to Saas-Fee: according to Laperuz, Boris spends his vacation here. Meanwhile, Olivier meets Passavan, and he offers him to become the editor of the magazine “Argonauts.” In a letter from Switzerland, Bernard tells Olivier about his acquaintance with his uncle, confesses his love for Laura and explains the purpose of their arrival: Edward needed a thirteen-year-old boy who is under the care of a Polish doctor and is very friendly with her daughter Armor. Boris suffers from some sort of nervous illness. The author notes that Bernard did not foresee what a storm of low feelings will trigger his letter in the soul of a friend. Olivier feels a cruel jealousy. At night, he is visited by demons, In the morning he goes to the Count de Passavana.

Edward enters a doctor’s diary in the diary: Sofronitskaya is sure that Boris is hiding some shameful secret. Edward unexpectedly tells his friends the design of the novel “Counterfeiters.” Bernard advises to start the book with a counterfeit coin, which he slipped in the shop. Sofronitskaya shows Boris’s “talisman”: it’s a scrap of paper with the words “Gas Phone. One Hundred Thousand Rubles”. It turns out that at nine years old the schoolmate introduced him to a bad habit – naive children called it “magic.” Edward seems that the doctor has developed all the wheels of the boy’s mental mechanism. Boris can not live without chimeras – perhaps it will benefit him to stay at the Azasa hostel. From Olivier comes a letter, where he in rapturous tones tells of a journey through Italy in the company of Robert. The author notes with concern, that Edward makes a clear oversight – because he knows how the atmosphere in the house of the Azayas – Wedels is poisoned. It seems that Edward lies to himself, and the devil whispers to him. It is a pity that, on the whim of fate, Bernard took the place intended Olivier. Edward loves his nephew, and Passavan will spoil this fragile youth. But Bernard, under the influence of Laura’s love, is clearly changing for the better.

Returning to Paris, Edward introduces Boris to his grandfather. Molinier Sr. tells Edward about his troubles: he started a small affair on the side, and his wife, apparently, found love letters. Alivier and Bernard are also worried about him: Judge Investigator Profitande is leading a case of debauchery, where students are attracted, and from Bernard one can not expect anything good, because he is illegitimate.

Edward arranges Bernard as a tutor to Azasa’s boarding school. The old man Laperuz also moves there to be closer to Boris. The boy was immediately disliked by the brightest of the students, Leon Geridanizol – the nephew of Viktor Struville, who was once expelled from the boarding house, and now is engaged in the sale of counterfeit coins. Gehry’s company includes Georges Molyneux and several other schoolchildren – they were regulars of the same “brothel of debauchery” that Prosecutor Molyneux told Eduard. After the police raid, the boys have to remove the yellow ribbons from their buttonholes, but Leon is already ready to offer them a new interesting case. Polina Molyneux shares her suspicions with her brother: money began to disappear in the house, and recently letters of the mistress to her husband disappeared – Polina herself found them a long time ago, and it never occurred to her to be jealous, but it would be extremely unpleasant, if George finds out about it. Her younger son is extremely worried – after all, Vincent is already an adult, and Olivier can rely on the love of Edward. Meanwhile, Olivier suffers: he needs Bernard and Edward, and he is forced to deal with Passavan. At the banquet about the exit of the Argonauts, the deadly drunk Olivier arranges a scandal, and the next morning he tries to commit suicide. Edward saves him, and harmony reigns in their relationship. Passavan convinces himself that he overestimated Olivier’s beauty and ability – the duties of the editor of the magazine are much better handled by the crook Struville. deadly drunk Olivier arranges a scandal, and the next morning he tries to commit suicide. Passavan convinces himself that he overestimated Olivier’s beauty and ability – the duties of the editor of the magazine are much better handled by the crook Struville.

Eduard unexpectedly visits the investigating magistrate Profitandie and asks in a relative way to warn the prosecutor Molyneux: his son Georges was involved in a scandalous story with prostitutes, and now got involved in a fraud with false coins. After the agonizing vacillations, Profitandier starts a conversation about Bernard – Eduard is convinced that this strong, self-confident man is most eager to regain the love of his son. And Bernard with brilliance stands the exam for a bachelor. He so wants to share his joy, that he hardly suppresses the desire to go to his father. In the Luxembourg garden he is an angel. Bernard follows him first to the church, then to a meeting of members of different parties, then to the big boulevards, filled with an idle indifferent crowd, and finally to poor quarters where diseases, hunger, shame, crimes, prostitution reign.

Meanwhile, a catastrophe is brewing in the hostel. Children poison the old Laperouse, and the company, headed by Gehry, steals his revolver. Struvil has views on these schoolchildren: counterfeit coins go naked, and Georges Molyneux obtained his father’s love letters. Sofronitskaya informs Boris about Broni’s death – henceforth the whole world is presented to the boy as a desert. At the instigation of Struville, Leon tosses a piece of paper on his desk with the words “Gas Phone, One Hundred Thousand Rubles”. Boris, who has already forgotten about his “magic”, can not resist the temptation. Deeply despising himself, he agrees to pass the test for the title of “strong man” and shoots during the lesson – only Leon knew that the revolver was loaded. On the last pages of the diary, Edward describes the consequences of this suicide – the dissolution of Azasa’s guesthouse and the deep shock of Georges, forever healed from his admiration Geridanizolem. Olivier informs Edward that Bernard returned to his father. Investigator Profitandie is invited by the Molyneux family for dinner. Edward wants to get to know the little Kalu.
